Is this an Accurate and Easily understood definition of Atheism?

Post by Tcg »

.
I recently heard this definition of atheism:
"Atheism is the condition of not believing that a God or deity exists."
I think it is clearer than the one I usually espouse which is that atheism is the lack of belief in god/gods. The only issue I have with is its singular nature. Perhaps, Atheism is the condition of not believing that any gods or deities exist, would be better.

Is this a good definition?

To be clear: Atheism is not a disbelief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of belief in gods.

Not believing isn't the same as believing not.

I must assume that knowing is better than not knowing, venturing than not venturing; and that magic and illusion, however rich, however alluring, ultimately weaken the human spirit.

I'm glad you found an option that works for both of you. From what I understand, even the "non-alcoholic" beers have a bit of alcohol, but if that weren't true, if they had zero% alcohol, we'd have a good illustration of the question at hand. See that beer over there, it has alcohol. See that beer oldbadger's holding, it has none. Or like when I used to order Philly steak sandwiches from Gino's you're asked Wit or Witout. Answer wit and you get cheese on it. Witout and you get none.

Ask someone if they believe in gods and if they answer Wit, they are a theist. Any other answer or even no answer and they are an atheist. "No cheese for you."

That appears to work well enough for the loose arranging of "Theists" and "Atheists" but to the rest of us it is and odd looking arrangement.

But the 'rest of you' Are Theist or atheists. I don't see how it looks odd to anyone but you. Again you seem to be projecting (not to say Foisting) your own views onto atheist, theists and the rest of them.

This shows that the position of "others" has also moved from the default of Atheism. They still lack belief [as well as disbelief] but the lack is based in knowledge rather than in ignorance.

The Others are neither Atheist, Theist or non-Theist re The Question of GODs

I see what you are getting at but knowledge or lack of informs belief or non - belief, but 'the others' (agnostic) covers also those who beleive or do not, based on their knowledge. Because we are all agnostics, believers or not.

I get the idea that most don't do the religion debate, they may even regard the debate as pretty absurd. But the fact remains that most will have a belief in the god -claim or not, whether informed or not. There are no Theists and non -theists in a sort of dotty minority and the everyone else not voting this year.

I assume you're talking about Genesis Stout, if so, I must admit it is my favorite beer. If someone asked, if you could only drink one beer for the rest of your life what would it be, without hesitation I'd answer - Guiness Stout.

Yes....... Guinness is a stout.... we've just chopped off the 'stout' bit over here.
And as you say, it's the best.
Ask someone if they believe in gods and if they answer Wit, they are a theist. Any other answer or even no answer and they are an atheist. "No cheese for you."

Yes..... if there is a big staircase leading up to a landing with Cephas up there, interviewing applicants, it's going to be a dodgy situation for you and me.
'Right! You two! Did ya live Wit or Witout? '
You: Ah! Yes! Well, you see.... it's like this...
Me (pointing at you): It was him! All him! I could be convinced ... I like fishing too, you know......

You are persistently not getting it. atheism is not having a god -belief. One may have thought it through or they may not, but it is still all atheism.

Lol! Well... I have walked on water, quite a few times. It was always during the heart of winter... but still.

Yeah, if Peter's up there I might regret not being convinced of Wit. Of course, I could ask him about that whole cock crowing thing and him picking Witout three times in a row. That might get me kicked down the staircase, but I'd have a point.

You should be ok if you ask. Peter's letter says the Christian should always be ready to answer questions cheerfully (1.Peter 3.15) so unless they have gone full Maafia up there, he shouldn't begrudge you a fair response.
