Monarchy VS Republic

Post by Noachian »

Just curious on what people's opinions on this are. Personally I believe Monarchy is more supreme for Monarchical cultures (most European countries etc), where as Republics are more appropriate for newer, more recently founded Nations such as the Unted States or other super-United-Federal nations. I will join the arguement when the poll gets a good number of votes.

While our current US administration may feel otherwise, I think there is no simply better way of governing. The government must fit the people.

Look at what's happening in Iraq. "Democracy" has been shoved down their throats. What our marvelous leaders in Washington have failed to recognize is that in a democracy, all sides of every issue decided in a democratic fashion must accept the legitimacy of every possible outcome. If an issue is decided by popular vote or even the vote of elected representatives, the issue must be decided with finality. If one side or another does not accept the legitimacy of the outcome the integrity of the system becomes in jeopardy. The issue comes back again and again, perhaps in different flavors, or perhaps only in a fashion that undermines the process. If it's an issue regarding the function of the government, it may be that the government itself dissolves as parties withdraw or are excluded.

Democracy is only for a people that accept that they are one and that every outcome is legitimately decided by the proper execution of government.

If a population cannot work in that fashion, rule must be arbitrary. One authority must decide in the absence of an effective cooperative government. Don't ask me how that's supposed to work out.

The best government is one that works fairly, consistently, predictably, and such that the overwhelming majority of its people face a high probability of satisfaction. I don't know if you can put a label on that.
If all the ignorance in the world passed a second ago, what would you say? Who would you obey?

What makes a culture monarchical?

I'd get rid of the Monarchy in a flash if they didn't bring so much money in from tourists. Unfortunately I feel we're stuck with them. At least now hereditary peers have been mostly stopped from sitting in the House of Lords, which is a move in the right direction, ie. away from those who did nothing more memorable than be born into privilege running the country.

A culture where Monarchy is repected and where it is upholded by the populace (except those who see Republic as some kind of Democracy enhancing Government which of course would in Political Science would be obsurd to suggest). Where Monarchy is farmiliur and where people relate to a Monarch from a familiur family rather than once-again politician as Head of State. In a Monarchy, the Royal family is born-and-raised to do this impossible job, in a Republic it is just another politician who has his allegience to some aspect of political idealolgy. That is why I love being a Monarchy personally, knowing that there is a person who reprisents our nation not as a Socialist or a Environmentalist or a Capitalist or a Nationalist, but as a Briton! (Although Her Majesty is not of course just British but a number of different Commonwealth Nationalities, Briton by race only.) Monarchy to me unites. But you have to have a Monarchical heritage to have this feeling I think, thats what makes it supreme in certain conditions of identity.
