Gender

Post by Lotan »

Is there any good reason that our gender should be listed as a part of our public profile? I know that we can just select 'unknown' but that's not the same.
I would prefer it if 'gender' was optional and only displayed if selected by the forum member. In the rare circumstance where a member's gender is of relevance to a debate topic, the member could at that time share this information, otherwise I think that it is unnecessary and possibly counterproductive.
Thank you for your consideration.

Actually, I find it convenient so that I can know to use the proper pronoun.

Another option is to say, "Undisclosed" instead of "Unknown". Would this solution suffice?

I personally think that "Undisclosed" is preferable to "Unknown". I would hate to think that anyone's gender is unknown. :confused2:

I guess that makes sense. I just felt that it wasn't necessary. No big thing.

Gender, is it necessary?
After reading every ones post and comments I have to agree with all of you. You all make great points.
Of course there are times when it is good to know.
It seems to me that I find my gender necessary do to my life style.
I think that I would not date a genderless woman. It would be confusing.
If I were a homosexual I would also not want to date a genderless man.
If I was in surgery I would not want to be thought of as genderless during the operation and would hope I would not be genderless after the surgery.
I would hate to name everything with a gender such as other languages do even if I do anyway. She is a comfortable chair is fine but don't ask me what gender it is.
I am not sure it is right to attribute gender to God but parts of him/her might warrant a gender to explain a concept that we do not want to attribute to God in a masculine biological bias.
On those questionnaires? I don't like filling them out any way. Then they want a mr. or Miss or Mrs or even a ms. Who cares? Why do women have 3 designation and men only one?
What were we talking about?

I think they use the information for data analysis. So they know how many men are buying vs how many women.
