My suggestion for testing civility and whether a personal remark goes over the line:
"What would Jesus Do?"

Moderator Clarification

Speaking truth need not be uncivil. For instance, to say "That statement is not true for the following reasons" is quite civil whereas "You are lying" is very uncivil -- though both convey basically the same information.

The most common stumbling block to civility that I observe is people becoming emotional and directing comments to other debaters personally rather than addressing the issues being discussed.

It would behoove everyone and improve the quality of debate if the truth is told in a civil manner and without personal comments.

I do not see christianity as love at all. This is not the history, it is difficult for those who have been victimized by christianity to be civil with christians who speak about truth and love. When christians feel their ability for them to practice or express faith it is okay to be uncivil but when a a non christian speaks in same fashion it is uncivil. Truth hurts, truth more cultures have been victimized world wide by christianity than any other paradigm. Close second Islam, they just haven't been around as long to catch up. Real truth not speculative but actual, now is this uncivil no but many christian become upset when presented and said as fact because it is.
