I see it is a subtle way to remind those folk of the 'no true scotsman' fallacy
"Whatever you are totally ignorant of, assert to be the explanation of everything else"
William James quoting Dr. Hodgson
"When I see I am nothing, that is wisdom. When I see I am everything, that is love. My life is a movement between these two."

This reminds me of the "no true Scottsman" argument.
It goes something like this:
"No true Scottsman eats sugar on his breakfast poridge(sp?)."
"My friend is a Scottsman and he puts sugar all over his breakfast every day."
"Yeah? Well no TRUE Scottsman would do that."
This is the reasoning Christians use to weasel out of responsibility for things like the Crusades, the Salem Witch Trials and most church attrocities. Those people who did all those bad things in the name of Christianity couldn't have been "true" Christians.

To be perfectly honest, I debated theology with Christians for YEARS before someone told me the no true scottsman argument. I thought it appropriate to bring up here just in case someone hadn't heard it yet like I hadn't.
