Any Christians here fans of the Sherlock series?

Post by rikuoamero »

Just wondering, if there are any Christians on this website who are fans of the BBC series Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.
What did you think of it? Also more to the point - what did you think of the death of Moriarty at the end of Season 2 and the cliffhanger ending of Season 3, and then what we got from Season 4?

EDIT - In case a mod wants to move this topic...please don't. I actually have a point with this.

I haven't watched the TV show at all, but I do actually find a connection between mystery fiction and Christianity- namely the "locked room mystery" that Matthew presents us with. Jesus's tomb is the room, the Roman guards are the lock, and the vanishing corpse is the mystery.

Of course any mystery fiction would be absolute trash if they used the same answer for a locked room as the Christians do for theirs. ;)

I watched and liked the show, particularly the first two seasons. It is an enjoyable work of fiction.

In the world of the show, Moriarty is dead. If there is a fifth season – I highly doubt there will be; they wrapped up the show at the end of season four – then Moriarty will remain dead. For better or worse, that is the story they told.
I enjoyed it, but on thinking back on it recently, I realised that the producers (Moffat et al) seem to show utter contempt for the source material.
Case in point - in the first episode, Sherlock is examining the woman in pink's body. He sees that she has scratched RACHE and a different character opines that it's the German word for revenge. Sherlock immediately tosses that aside, and comes across as if the mere idea of it being the German word is ludicrous, idiotic (instead of what he did in the story, where he carefully explains that the word is a deception, meant to fool British police into thinking its German socialists).

Anyway, my point is that yes, in the world of the show, Moriarty is dead. Sherlock saw him kill himself, Sherlock is extremely difficult to fool and even said himself at the end of the Abominable Bride episode that Moriarty is dead.
And yet, us viewers were given that teaser with London's TV screens displaying a message. And what we got was, well, you know what we got. We got another teaser, the video I posted up above, and I'm sitting here thinking "Just how stupid do you think your audience is, Moffat?"
Moffat wrote himelf into a corner. He produced this series as being focused on Moriarty, despite him originally being in only two of Conan Doyles's stories, and once they killed him in Season 2...they were stuck. For him to come back would require magic, and not intelligence.

Okay, I basically agree with everything you wrote. I don’t know if I would go so far as to say there is contempt for the source material; more that they were telling their own story which was inspired by, but not actually based on, the source material. And the constant problem of telling the Sherlock story is that people want to bring Moriarty in too quickly, and then they tend to write themselves into a corner.

In this incarnation I agree that bringing Moriarty back would require magic, in the common use meaning of the world that defines magic as anything that isn’t real.

Having not watched the teasers I was unaware of the bait and switch.
