Incorrect belief.

Post by postroad »

Some would say not believing in Jesus is an incorrect belief leading to damnation. But what about beliefs based on incorrect doctrines. Do they need to be repented from as a sin leading to damnation?

If someone gets some teaching wrong, they would likely be judged according to how culpable they are in getting it wrong – given that we have an all just God. Also, what I think will happen will be if you die believing some false belief you will obviously have to be purified of this false belief before entering heaven and you obviously would want to be if in fact you seek Truth/God.

Sin is transgression of the Law. Incorrect beliefs, such as the false gospel of grace/cross, which has "released you from the Law" (Romans 7:6) only lead to transgression of the law. Now promotion of false beliefs is another matter, for one is judged by their words. Not believing in "Jesus" will not condemn a person. Now, not heeding his message, of doing to others as you would have them to do you, is another problem (Matthew 7:24-27). This applies whether you have heard the message or not. Although the message is central to many religions. Speaking a word against the son of man is not an unforgivable sin, rejecting the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Revelation, the Law and the prophets, apparently is (Matthew 12:32).

Matthew 12:32
Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the one to come.

New International Version Matthew 12:37
For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."

(Remind me what belief system you have? It must have been a while.)

Are you planning on going to God self justified?

In the end God is a mystery and we will all have false doctrine on some level. But as you point out getting the basics right is still possible and consequential.

Blasphemy of the Spirit was called unforgivable. Aren't people who claim the Spirit blaspheming it by their sinful actions?

Sin is defined by the bible as transgressing the law. That keeps it pretty simple. Doctrines that are contrary to God or the law would be a sin. These can all be forgiven. As was stated Blasphemy of God(Holy Spirit) is apparently not.

That would depend on what the person believed damnation to be. Since, there is no true doctrine, which claims that there is a hell or a place where humans are tortured for eternity, then not believing in the Christ would not lead to damnation. However, there would be a different type consequence for refusing to acknowledge who the Son of God is...

Beliefs based on incorrect doctrines do not (in general) cause an after death consequence. However, failure to seek out the truth could cause difficulties in our lives before death.

Therefore, even if an individual refuses to accept God ways, they are shown mercy. This doesn't mean that they are forgiven, it just means that they will just cease to exist…For, an individual who wouldn't be happy in God's Kingdom, won't be there!

A very good question, although the answers must be speculative and depend on one's conception of God.

I do not think God holds people accountable for false beliefs which they earnestly hold. I do not find this in the N.T. In the gospels, men are not condemned for disbelieving in Jesus (whoever blasphemes the son of man will be forgiven); they are, however, condemned for attributing the work of the Spirit to demons: that is, for calling what is clearly good (healings and exorcisms) what is clearly bad (demonic activity).

In the Pauline epistles, men are condemned for their works (Ro. 1-3), not for their disbelief in Jesus (Ro. 11).

There is only one thing that keeps people form receiving salvation. That's the rejection of Jesus Christ and his offer of it. It isn't any more complicated than that.
