Why so much disagreement within Christianity?

Perhaps it is disconcerting for ‘Christians’ to discover that their favorite denomination / sect / cult is just one among tens of thousands that belong to the Christian Club – and that there is GREAT variation in beliefs within the umbrella of ‘Christianity’.

From a current thread -- some of the major groups within 'Christianity':

In two words: Satanic influence.
Ah yes, when we really mess up things, blame 'Satan'

If we are going to believe in supernatural beings, might as well imagine that one of them is evil and corrupts all the good stuff.

Not to mention that the evil one clearly has more power and influence than God is able to muster up in defense.

That exactly describes the Christianity I belong to! We also have complete doctrinal unity! Unfortunately, I'm the only member at the moment, because all of the apostates that disagree with our (well, "my") doctrine have been disfellowshipped (in love, of course). They're all welcome back once they agree with our (well, "my") doctrine again, regardless of nationality, physical characteristics, social standing, or language spoken.

That pretty much describes many Christians I have come across on the internet, unfortunately for them Jesus spoke about his "church" having other members including "leaders" who would judge other individuals on certain matters. He also spoke of those who would "shepherd" and " feed" and the "sheep" that would be shepherded. A church of one cannot be what Jesus described. Also, one member also cannot exist on an international scale. If one was searching form the "true religion", religions of one would automatically be eliminated.

And if they claim they are not "a religion of one" but part of Christendom, they would be eliminated because they are not united. It's the exact opposite of a "win-win" situation.

Sorry,

JW

Not to mention that the holy spirit is there to bring unity amongst Christians but it fails miserably.

It was Jesus's intention that there be unity amongst the churches. He even prayed for this:

John 17:20-21
"I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.

So this shows us that either Jesus's prayer was useless or he was not sent by God

We can use the excuse of Satan all we like but I don't see how you can escape either one of those conclusions. If Jesus was sent by God, then even his prayers achieved nothing. If Jesus couldn't get what he asked for why would anyone think their prayers would have any postiive effect?

The bible also commands unity amongst Chrisitans:
1 Cor 1:10 I appeal to you brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.

Unity is clearly a huge issue. The fact that's it's not there is damning evidence that there is no holy spirit doing anything.

Society and its morals evolve and will continue to evolve. The bible however remains the same and just requires more and more apologetics and claims of "metaphors" and "symbolism" to justify it.

Prayer is like rubbing an old bottle and hoping that a genie will pop out and grant you three wishes.

There is much about this world that is mind boggling and impressive, but I see no need whatsoever to put it down to magical super powered beings.
