If Christianity is false then how did they convince billions of people over the centuries?

Christians can't prove their testament is true. Not if they must read passages at face value. Their proof ALWAYS comes from text that has been mistranslated or misrepresented in one way or another.
Christians will say: It may say that but it doesn't really mean that. It's an allegory or foreshadowing of some future event that points to Jesus.

Christians CAN NOT use the Hebrew Scriptures in it's pure state. They can't. Their truth is a lie when it's held up to the truth.
They must find a way to manipulate the text. They must change the message that is being conveyed. Often with torturous explainations. twists and turns that eventually comport with what they are trying to prove

NEVER CAN THEY take a passage at face value. Because their truth becomes a lie
What kind of religion MUST always reshape what God has spoken to produce another meaning to prove it us the truth?

Check every piece of evidence a Christian claims to have which 'PROVES' THEY ARE RIGHT. REALLY...CHECK! IT WILL NOT BE AUTHENTIC. No evidence will come from an untainted passage.

Why is so much Hebrew scripture in Greek?
Hebrew is a twice dead language, with inconsistent translations.
The Oldest Christian text are far older than the Oldest Hebrew text.
What are claimed to be old Hebrew text, Job, Noah and so on, are in fact the works of Canaan and other peoples, who had got them from even earlier peoples.
When you peel back the onion, you only find the core is someone else’s religions. The Assyrian and Babylonian, for Job, for example.

Actually it requires proving that the entire Old Testament is true first. And we all know that this cannot be done. To the contrary the original religion already contains endless contradictions. So the original religion can't even be true.

By the way, even if the Christian New Testament could be shown to be compatible with the Old Testament that still wouldn't prove that it's true. All that would show is that the NT is compatible with the OT, but that wouldn't show that the OT is true.

You seem to be assuming that the OT is true. But that assumption is already invalid.

At best all you can argue for is that the NT is incompatible with the OT. And you most certainly won't get any argument from me on that point. But that doesn't justify the OT either. So by dismissing Christianity you haven't made any progress at all in terms of supporting the original mythological folklore that has already been proven to be false by anyone who's actually paying attention.

If Christianity is false then how did they convince billions of people over the centuries?

The same way that humans were convinced to believe in Thor, Odin, Zeus, Yahweh, Allah and YHVH.

None of these have any validity yet millions of people throughout history were convinced to buy into these superstitions.

How did the Protestants convince people to reject Catholicism? How did the Protestants convince people to reject various Protestantisms for a specific Protestantism? How were the Muslims convinced to believe in Islam?

How were the Indians convinced of Hinduism or Buddhism?

How were so many Americans convinced to vote for Donald Trump?

Humans do stupid things all the time. That's human nature.
