Deadly Combination: ignorance, hate & religion

Post by Danmark »

Once again the tragic events in Boston April 15, 2013 involve the deadly combination of ignorance, religion and hatred. Once again the religion is Islam and the resources used to fuel the hate came from an Al Qaeda terrorist site. It becomes harder and harder not to blame Islam and religion in general, despite knowing that most Muslims are peace loving.

What triggered this topic is the news from a friend of the older of the two terrorists than he claimed the Bible was a 'cheap copy' of the Qur'an, despite the Qur'an having been written about 500 years after the NT.

Muslims argue vigorously that it is only a misunderstanding of their religion that results in acts of terror and that the Bible also has verses of violence and adherents who terrorize.

The question for debate is how much is ignorance to blame instead of religion?
does Islam play a particularly responsible role in the culture of terrorism?

Just a few of the verses from the Qu'ran that have been held by some to account for the culture of terrorism:

"Kill the unbelievers wherever you find them." Koran 2:191
"Make war on the infidels living in your neighborhood." Koran 9:123
"When opportunity arises, kill the infidels wherever you catch them." Koran 9:5
"Any religion other than Islam is not acceptable." Koran 3:85
"The Jews and the Christians are perverts; fight them."... Koran 9:30
"Maim and crucify the infidels if they criticize Islam" Koran 5:33
"Punish the unbelievers with garments of fire, hooked iron rods, boiling water; melt their skin and bellies." Koran 22:19
"The unbelievers are stupid; urge the Muslims to fight them." Koran 8:65
"Muslims must not take the infidels as friends." Koran 3:28
"Terrorize and behead those who believe in scriptures other than the Qur'an." Koran 8:12

'60 Minutes' had an interview with several college students, apparently Muslim, who seemed like nice guys, who stated they tried to get the older brother to join their Muslim Student group. They argued that if he had understood Islam better this tragedy would not have happened.

Sometimes Islam is on the receiving end.

Indeed it is. Terrorism is not justified no matter who or what group sponsors it.

One of the differences with Islam may be the percentage of adherents who are at least sympathetic to it. There must be clerics in other religions who are sympathetic with or actually practice terrorism, but I am not aware of them.

However, with Islam, there are many among their clergy who perpetrate, sponsor or encourage the terrorism of innocents, including children.

Just one example, relative to the recent bombings in Boston that claimed the lives of two young women and an 8 year old boy:

How many people have just "disappeard' in the Atheistic peoples republic of China?

A million or two million?

How many people have been murdered this week in our "secular society"?

And Christians and Churches are regulated like products in China.

Please replace the word "religion" with "Islam" if you are trying for any kind of accuracy in your rhetoric. An Islamist is not necessarily the same thing as a religious person. Islam is as much a political system as what progressives demand.

If you desire fairness and justice in valuing belief systems, look at the extremely deadly combination of scholarship, enlightenment and atheism, when it comes to stacking up the dead bodies.

Are you seriously claiming that Islam, unlike Christianity, is not a religion?
This old claim of blaming atheism for genocide by politicians is poorly put. Are you claiming that the failure to believe in god was the motive behind the murders, rather than politics?

With religion, murder is specifically and admittedly carried out for a religious purpose alone. It is GOD himself, the Abrahamic god of Jews, Christians, and Muslims who commands his followers to kill in his name. There is nothing comparable in your examples. Atheists do not go around killing because people are not atheists.

Famous dictators, including the Christian Hitler, killed for their own reasons, not because of their religious or atheistic beliefs. Their atheism was incidental to their murders, not a primary or even secondary cause.

With religionists, their religious beliefs are THE cause.

Ignorance exists in religious circles and outside religious circles so I would say it's mainly ignorance that's to blame. Though I won't discount religion, self esteem issues, mental capacity, upbringing and a host of other issues.

But let's not forget most (all?) religions have violence in its past, christianity is no exception.

Fact is, given ½ a chance, humanity can screw up most anything no matter how pure and/or innocent it was intended.

Can't we just get rid of ALL these evil Abrahamic religions? Think how pleasant life would be?
