Fake news

Post by JJ50 »

The Internet is full of fake news at present, which is highly unpleasant, Facebook seems to specialise in it! Although it appears to be a modern phenomenon, I wonder if actually the Bible started the trend with its less than credible stories?

With the news there are always two stories:

Democrat or Republican.
Abortion or Pro-life.
Black or white.

They are both wrong.

Such is as it has always been for as long as I can trace history:
Irish English.
East and West.
North and South.
God vs Godless.
Sadducee vs. Pharisee.
Imperialist or Republican.
Us vs. Them.

Two sides, both wrong.

It seems the easiest way to control people is to give them something to believe in, and divide them. Conceive of or allow people to conceive of, controversy.

Highly unlikely, historical evidence indicates Christianity started in the very location where it's principle character was said to have lived, well within living memory of those that could, and by all accounts would, have exposed the stories about him as false if that were the case. If Nazareth never had a carpenter called Jesus who was famous in the region for his miracle working feats and public teaching, the local residents would have simply have had to point that they had only ever had one carpenter in the region and his name was Fred.

Well before Christianity the Romans issued a daily gazette known as the Acta Diurna.

There is NO verifiable historical evidence to support the gospel accounts regarding Jesus.

Stories without base didn't originate with the bible, but I do think it is fair to point to the acceptance of fake news and religious myths as having a common cause: human gullibility plus confirmation bias.

The way I see it, fake news is seeing a huge surge because people WANT to believe it. For some reason (or multiple), they desire to believe that what is being reported as true, must be so. I once saw a comment from someone confronted with the reality that what they were advocating for was false, and their response was along the lines of "well, if it isn't true, it should be." And there is the keystone of the fake news machine, truth doesn't matter, what matters is what people want to believe.

So, does it matter that there is literally 0 evidence for massive voter fraud in the U.S.? No. What matters is that there are people who want to believe that the Orange buffoon was more popular than Hilary. So they don't need facts or evidence to believe it, they just need someone agreeing with them and publishing it somewhere. Credibility need not apply.

Are you suggesting that there is not a single statement in any of the Gospel accounts that can be supported by historical evidence?

He said "regarding Jesus." There is no independent (outside the Gospels) contemporary evidence to corroborate Jesus' existence, making any story attributed to him suspect.

Yes he did say regarding Jesus, but he didn't say all of that regarding Jesus he said (quote) no "verifiable historical evidence" regarding Jesus. Thus my question, I will await clarification.

You keep leaving out the "regarding Jesus" part of what they said (it goes in the quotes. You are taking part of what they said and twisting it, they never said that no part of the Gospels at all is historically devoid of factual information. The gospels at least discussed some cities and people who appear to be real). There is nothing about the Gospels with respect to Jesus that has ever been verified as true considering that there isn't even any verification of Jesus as having existed.
