Humpty Dumpty

Post by Faber »

"When I use a word it means just what I choose it to mean" (Humpty Dumpty in 'Through the Looking Glass' by Lewis Carroll).

Those who deny the Trinity often employ the same rational as Humpty Dumpty in their approach to defining the words of the Bible. Since the proper definitions refute their doctrine they resort to attacking the meanings of the biblical words as found in the lexicons.
What they offer is simply their opinion of what they think the words ought to mean in accordance with their beliefs.
"The Bible is inspired not the lexicons" is a claim so often made. What is ignored is that the words of the Bible are to be properly defined otherwise like Humpty Dumpty words can simply mean anything we want them to. Communication will inevitably break down.

That's irrelevant because there is more than one way to express a truth claim.

The word "omniscient" isn't in the Bible yet the Watchtower describes God as being omniscient.

No its not irrelevant. The OP is suggesting people are redefining words to establish bogus doctrine and that we should stick to the words in the bible to establish what is true... so it is an entirely relevant question, seeing that some claim the trinity is a central Christian teaching, this is like saying a book is about the War but happens to not mention the word "war".

If we are to respect the words in the bible, the first thing would be to ask what are the words in the bible. Therefore far from being irrelevant, the first logical question is: Is the word TRINITY in the bible?

Awake!: GOD is fittingly described as omnipotent and omniscient—almighty and all-knowing. (Is God Everywhere?, March 8, 2005).

The word "omniscient" does not ever appear in the Bible yet the Jehovah's Witnesses describe God as such.

So you ADMIT the word "trinity" does not even appear once in the bible ?

Which word(s) are you claiming is a synonym of "trinity" in scripture? Neither the word nor the notion of a truine god is scriptural - it has been imposed on scripture by theologians.

Your whole point just came crashing down because the Jehovah's Witnesses apply a word unto God that is nowhere found in the Bible.

Case closed.

Should we just presume that because something is not actually named in the bible that it is false? That is was never intended that anyone use that term to describe anything? That it is a made up or imaginary concept?

There is way more evidence in the bible of the trinity than there is for a special elite group called "The Jehovah's Witnesses".

Society and its morals evolve and will continue to evolve. The bible however remains the same and just requires more and more apologetics and claims of "metaphors" and "symbolism" to justify it.

Prayer is like rubbing an old bottle and hoping that a genie will pop out and grant you three wishes.

There is much about this world that is mind boggling and impressive, but I see no need whatsoever to put it down to magical super powered beings.

The Trinity is simply a human way to think about God. I think it is a concept that has special resonance for Christians; but at the end of the day, no human image can fully capture who and what God is.

Jehovah's Witnessses (unlike many Christian groups) have not been given their name by opposers or others, or taken on the name of some human leader (for example Lutherans ) ... but formerly adopted that name based on the bible scripture of Isaiah 43:10.
