Meditation can be Dangerous?

Prayer and meditation are considered a pathway to God or spirituality, but there is evidence it can be dangerous.

"In 1992, David Shapiro, a professor at UCLA Irvine, published an article about the effects of meditation retreats. After examining 27 people with different levels of meditation experience, he found 63 per cent of them had suffered at least one negative effect and seven per cent profoundly adverse effects."

I found this article very surprising.

It is interesting that someone says so. But similarly, medication can also be dangerous. Often it depends on how the matter is used. :)

Overcomer wrote: I see that the article focused on Buddhism and yoga, but it didn't talk about Christian meditation. Having spent some time in charismatic churches, I learned this: Meditation, when it isn't concentrated on the God of the Bible or the Word of God, can open doors to demonic spirits.

Christian meditation consists of focusing on the Lord, concentrating on Scripture, reflecting on its meaning, allowing yourself to hear from the Holy Spirit for guidance and edification.

Meditation done apart from Jesus can be an invitation to spiritual entities NOT of God to set up house in someone. That's why it can be dangerous and that's why it can have negative outcomes for those who engage in it. I am not saying this happens all the time to everybody. I'm only saying that it CAN have that result and that's why some people can suffer because of their involvement in meditation. Ignorance about the spiritual realm can be tremendously costly.

Here's an instructive article on what Christian meditation is, how it is done, and why it is beneficial:

How can we know that you have not opened your mind up to Jesus demons?
I see special pleading going on here.

When you meditate... demons.
When I meditate... it is with the one true god. Allah be praised.
You can give a man a fish and he will be fed for a day, or you can teach a man to pray for fish and he will starve to death.

I blame man for codifying those rules into a book which allowed superstitious people to perpetuate a barbaric practice. Rules that must be followed or face an invisible beings wrath. - KenRU
