How old is God? Why the chair?

Post by Thomas123 »

Mark 16:19
19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.

........
Our perceptions regarding God are now fully anesthetized.
Just as Love is all flowers and red hearts God is a wizard on a throne.

You cannot evolve into God using these infantile analogies.

Many anti-God debaters are using these caricature pop-ups to try and sound profound only to be met by a barrage of placard wielding zombies.

Do we need to change course completely?

HOW OLD IS GOD?

Scripturally, God doesnt have an age as he had no beginning.

God is eternal. God doesn't sit in a chair or exist in a place in Classical Theism, which is held by the church. This is to be understood as Jesus acts as God in heaven. And btw, heaven is not a place right now, but a state of existence.

Jesus is God, but he is also man, and that whole person acts as God in heaven.

Thomas123: You know that ,AFG, I know that and it is what I have often stated. Explain to me why Christianity, continues to encourage and instruct with the most infantile of mental constructs.

Give me 5 decent reasons for why this continues to happen in 2023.

If Ptah can sit in a chair

And if Thor can sit in a chair

And Odin can sit in a chair

And Zeus can sit in a chair

Then the god of the Jews and Christians can darn well sit in a chair as well!

And how do you know he doesn't sit in a chair?
Do you have some inside info no one else is privy to?
I ask, because as it stands the Bible disagrees with you. Even the Catholic editions.

Keeping the definition of "throne" in mind:

throne
/THrōn/
noun: throne; plural noun: thrones
a ceremonial chair for a sovereign, bishop, or similar figure.

consider what Isaiah 6:1 says:

(New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition)
1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple.

And what 1 Kings 22:19 says:
(New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition)
19 Then Micaiah said, “Therefore hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, with all the host of heaven standing beside him to the right and to the left of him.

And btw, heaven is not a place right now, but a state of existence.
So, in the whenever, after being a state of existence right now, just what will heaven be, and where?

I would consider Post 5 by Miles to be 'awesome '
Thanks ,a picture paints a thousand words. Gratitude for the originality displayed here!

What these constructs have to do with God belief in 2023, is beyond me. The only guy that I associate with a chair nowadays, is the Pope,as he is invariably ancient.

Why would a God actually need to sit down??

No offense but I find your view silly.

I recommend looking up what classical theism is and how it differs from many people's basic views of God. And I also recommend learning the main argument that Aristotle uses to arrive at this idea of God, which is the argument from change.

I can't think of a more concise, universally understood metaphor for Sovereignty than " God sits on the throne". Nor can I think of anything that better represents the hope and faith of religion than, " God sits on the throne."

Considering the source, absolutely none taken.

Not until you answer my three questions in post 5,

1. "how do you know he doesn't sit in a chair?"

2. "Do you have some inside info no one else is privy to?"

3. "So, in the whenever, after being a state of existence right now, just what will heaven be, and where?
"

But in any case it's quite obvious that being a Catholic you would be pretty much up to your neck in classical theism: however, if I recall correctly there's nothing in it that would prevent god from sitting in his chair. After all, your religion's own Bible recognizes god doing just that.

Isaiah 6:1
1 In the year of King Uzziah's death I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne; his train filled the sanctuary.

1 kings 22:19

Micaiah went on, 'Now listen to the word of Yahweh. I saw Yahweh seated on his throne with the whole array of heaven standing by him, on his right and on his left.

People may have "silly' views (as you call them,AFG), but is it any wonder? Ancient Biblical metaphors for God, be they Sumerian, Judaic, Hellinistic, Roman ...even pagan have continued to be used and reinforced by some of the main theistic movements ,to this day.
AquinasForGod , you introduced yourself into this conversation with apparent knowledge. Please now attempt a learned response to my simple question, above.
Thanks!
