What Must Morality Be?

Post by Purple Knight »

Question for debate: Are there any features morality logically must have?

For example, one could say it was immoral to breathe, and I think the reason people would dismiss that proposition is that it fails one or more of the basic aspects of morality, which sadly people don't attempt to elucidate or analyse on a conscious level.

I think we should start here. What are some of the aspects morality must have, and why?

Perhaps we can start with the idea that morality must be logical, coherent, and true. Logical here means simply non-contradictory, coherent is fairly self-explanatory, and true here simply means that morality must actually be what it is. In other words, a moral tenet should not be a lie; if it says one thing but means another, it is not a good moral principle. It must actually say what it means.

The reasoning for these basic logical requirements is that if these are not met, morality is not reasonably followable. And I think it's fair to say morality is meant to be followed.
