I know that currently, when a poster is put on probation they are fined tokens. I don't agree with this. I think that if they have done enough to warrant probation, then their status should be affected. In this case, I am referring to guru, prodigy etc... If these titles are suppose to show the maturity one gains through multiple posts, then I think if they are put on probation, their status should be penalized rather than their tokens.
Any opinions?

I think the shame thing would work well. Treat 'em like a Catholic school boy!
Stick a naughty note next to their name in bold red letters so that any post they make has the words ON PROBATION next to it. After X number of posts, it goes away. Getting off of probation should be based upon their future behavior (post count with no complaints - perhaps 50 polite posts) rather than time.
Then there is naughty Zoot from Monty Python:
GALAHAD: I seek the Grail! I have seen it, here in this castle!
DINGO: No! Oh, no! Bad, bad Zoot!
GALAHAD: What is it?
DINGO: Oh, wicked, bad, naughty Zoot! She has been setting alight
to our beacon, which, I just remembered, is grail-shaped. It's not the
first time we've had this problem.
GALAHAD: It's not the real Grail?
DINGO: Oh, wicked, bad, naughty, evil Zoot! Oh, she is a naughty
person, and she must pay the penalty -- and here in Castle Anthrax, we
have but one punishment for setting alight the grail-shaped beacon. You
must tie her down on a bed and spank her!
GIRLS: A spanking! A spanking!
DINGO: You must spank her well. And after you have spanked her, you
may deal with her as you like. And then, spank me.
VARIOUS GIRLS: And spank me.
And me.
And me.
DINGO: Yes, yes, you must give us all a good spanking!

The moderator who did this please PM immediately.
To all:
The above is an extremely well known and replayed Monty Python sketch from Search For the Holy Grail that my 12 year old niece thinks is funny and can recite.
If the words "oral sex" presented in the humor sketch in the manner they were presented can be considered offensive or in bad taste then my tag line - a bible quote - MUST be considered downright horrific and me worthy of probation for having it. I am completely serious. Put me on probation for my Deuteronomy tag line or un-edit the Monty Python sketch quote!

There, I did it for you.
Below is what I think it should look like when I am placed on probation for having not edited out the words "ore all seks" from one of the most hilarious movies in comedy history. This is just a suggestion. I suppose it could be any color and perhaps even be an animated GIF.

I have to agree with Confused on this one, that fining points is not the best idea. I also agree with Olsteng that their status should be affected.
What about taking away any titles or awards they have won. It seems that is clearly hypocrisy if a person has "most civil debator 2006" and then is on probation.
I would totally agree with the idea of some icon, or letters or sticky on all their posts, but I agree with McCulloch it doesn't seem fair to punish the moderators by making them read every post and approve it before a person can post.
Maybe some kind of scarlet letter.... like R for Rude, Redneck, Raging Lunatic, etc.
One other thought is to give the person a choice -- they can have the icon/ symbol by their name/on all their threads, or they can publicly apologize to the person whom they offended. If a case where someone just keeps using profanity, for example, then make them apologize to the forum.
I think the most effective of all would be to just delete their previous three posts, and post a note. Bubba is on probation. His last three posts have been deleted. You better believe people will think long and hard before they say rude things.
