What is a soul?

Post by Skrill »

It is fact that the Physical Brain controls memories, personality. Thousands of other actions are all controlled by our nervous system, which is managed by our brains.

Therefore, what consensus is there for any evidence for a soul(s)? As the existence of the soul is very central to any belief or religion.

"Well, I for one do NOT understand what is meant by the term "breath of life". I have NO idea what's that supposed to mean. People are alive or they are not. "

Work on it one day it will come to you*

I've experienced a sort of epiphany recently . We may be looking for the soul in the wrong place . The soul may not be within our body , our body may be within our soul , and our soul is much bigger than we think it is. Our soul may be as big as everything , the world and the stars in the sky. Everything we see smell taste and touch as well as our inner sensations perceptions thoughts and feelings. Our soul may include both the objective and subjective worlds. Our soul is not one individual separate being but everything all together an interrelated and interdependent whole. in other words what I am saying is there is only one soul and we are in it. This soul is known by all people by many names , I call it God.
This is a pretty idea.
Do you know it as a fact or an opinion?

it's rather a state of mind that can be experienced.

Sounds like a lot of fun.. do you mean that this is like one of those "thought experiments".. but in this case, for pure entertainment?

From what I can tell, the "state of mind" that you are talking about is what I would call "imagining neat stuff ".

Is that what you are doing?

If so, you might enjoy a book I just read .. Called "God's Debris". It's a really nifty thought experiment, with a kicker.

You are in good company. The monk Giordano Bruno in 1600 was stripped and burned to death for spreading this pantheistic view. Spinoza advanced it as well and since Einstein was influenced in what he thought by Spinoza, Albert said:

"We followers of Spinoza see our God in the wonderful order and lawfulness of all that exists and in its soul as it reveals itself in man and animal."

Emperor Marcus Aurelius, in his meditations, also suggests we are part of a great everything.

***Swedenborg calls this kind of reasoning Gordian Knot.

***We certainly are as recipients and as effect to a cause.

And Alexander simply cut the knot with his sword, solving a difficult problem in an easy way. I wonder what Swedenborg proposed.

I don't think there's much reasoning; just observation and comment.

Well try it and see what happens. Either you are the little man in your head (ego) or you are everything.

And this scholar says the soul is God hiding in us, playing hide and seek if you will, waiting in delight for us to find him/her. Mystics of every tradition encounter the sacred within the ground of their being as if God is the positive magnetic pole and we the negative. Same and not the same.
I have asked questions about what the Bible has said, and I'm not getting answers.

I asked, "What does it mean that Jesus gave his soul a ransom in exchange for many"? With your definition of a soul, explain that scripture please.
