The kingdom of God.

Post by Checkpoint »

Some seem to think it is entirely future, while others give the impression they are always thinking of it as present, and to not be looking at the future in kingdom terms at all.

Jesus had much to say about the kingdom, including this:
Luke 16:

6 The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone is being zealously urged into it.
So, where do you stand as to whether it is present, future, or has both a present and a future aspect?

On what basis?

According to which scriptures?

I guess you don't want to recognize that Daniel speaks of a literal kingdom and king. Otherwise, what kind of Messiah do you think the Jews were waiting for according to the promise?
I think its fair to say they were expecting a Jewish liberator, that at the least would shake off Roman domination. The majority were most unsatisfied with a future heavenly kingdom.

JW
Not merely that, but the content and meaning of his whole message.
Mark 1:

14 After the arrest of John, Jesus went into Galilee and proclaimed the gospel of God.
15 “The time is fulfilled, He said, “and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel".

Exactly, they did not want to accept that a humble "uneducated" non-violent Messiah. Jesus was not what the majority of Jews wanted. I have to wonder if it's the same today with religion, who wants to believe God has chosen uneducated door knockers that everyone laughs as to represent the kingdom? It's almost as absurd as a carpenter being the Messiah.

I think God chooses whoever chooses Him.

What do you understand Jesus meant when he announced, "the kingdom of God is near"?

If so, then it would seem you disavow what God says through Moses in the Pentateuch and Paul in Romans 9:
  • "What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means! For He says to Moses, 'I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.' So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, 'For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.' So then He has mercy on whomever He wills, and He hardens whomever He wills.' " [Romans 9:14-18]

Well I'm not JW, of course, but I'll answer this. It means the Kingdom is not merely something to come in the (distant) future, but also here now (in that very day Jesus was speaking).

Is your post an answer to another post here?

If not, why make that statement at all at this time on this thread?

I think that he is right, Jesus was the symbolic PASSOVER lamb. Through his death the various covenants were instigated that paved the way for the KINGDOM to be established in 1914.

What do you mean by saying "established in 1914"?

What "covenants were instigated that paved the way", and how did those instigations pave the way?

By "established" I mean became operational, be set up in order to start functioning as an entity. Imagine a device such as a computer. You buy it, plug it in and when you push the "start button" it starts to function. God's messianic kingdom (His government with Jesus at its head) started to function/ started to operate (went into action) in 1914.

  • The Abrahamic Covenant
  • The covenant in the order of Melchizedeck
  • Law Covenant
  • Davidic Covenant
  • New Covenant prophecy
  • THE KINGDOM COVENANT

They provided the needed protection and the legal basis by which the various aspects of the kingdom could emerge.
