Physical bodies

Post by Menotu »

The bible says, well quite a lot. But specifically, it speaks of the human body being a temple but also not being, ultimately, not really necessary to get in to heaven (1 Corinthians 15:42"44)
So why does God care what we do with our bodies?
Why does he care if we get a bit fat? Or pierce this, tat that? Sleep with who or how many?
Christians even say that the physical church building isn't necessary (1 Cor. 3:16, Heb. 4:16) to get in to heaven or even have a relationship with God.
But people say, yes, indeed, God is concerned with our bodies and what we do to them (and what we do with them when it comes to others).
But is that God's concern at all? The bible is not a directly dictated autobiographical reference of the almighty. It's simply 'this guy said that guys said God said'.
So all the concern with our physical and so much less concern with the spiritual?
Is it because people are lazy and it's easier to tell someone what they can't do with their bodies than their souls?

Our bodies are the image of God.. So disrespecting ones body is disrespecting the image of God..

Designers naturally care what is done with their inventions, not wishing them to be misused (which is one reason they protect them with patents), how much more the creator of the human body. God loves humans and doesnt want them to misuse their bodies, which would bring them harm and possibly harm others. It is for this reason God provides guidelines on what we should or should not do with the bodies he has given us.

I think all the rules God has given, are for our best, so that our life would be good. Even if the temple is not eternal, it is not good to intentionally ruin it.

Our bodies are the image of God.. So disrespecting ones body is disrespecting the image of God..
That's debatable, but does this mean the physical body is more important than the spiritual aspect?
Or is it just easy to control others' bodies than their souls?

Why is piercing, tats, etc ruining anything?
Some say it betters their appearance and it makes them happy. Should they be told 'You can't be happy because it's a temple!"?

No our spiritual aspect is more important.. Because these bodies will eventualy die and rot away.. But still while they exist they are the image of God and thus should be treated with respect..
Or is it just easy to control others' bodies than their souls?
Not sure why you even ask this? As far as i know i cannot control others bodies let alone their souls??

Christianity has always said that people are both physical and spiritual creatures. Half-breeds, if you will. Little gods that have to use the potty.

How exactly that will look in the Resurrection is hard to say. In 1 Corinthians Paul that flesh and blood cannot enter the kingdom of God. He also said that we would be changed and that the mortal must be clothed in immortality. This suggests are reworking, as opposed to a removal, of the physical body.

Jesus, the first born among the dead, had a body after His resurrection and ascended in the body. But that body was also different. Time and space did not have a hold on him the way they did prior to his resurrection. Since He is our example in all things this suggests that we will have a body, but a somehow changed body.

For now at least we have a physical body, and everything that our physical body does effects our soul. We cannot separate the physical from the spiritual. For the Christian, this interconnectedness means that everything we say about one has an impact on the other.
Understand that you might believe. Believe that you might understand. –Augustine of Hippo

I think happy-argument doesnt work, or what do you think, if someone becomes happy by raping little children, is it then ok to do so?

I could accept the argument that tats/piercing makes one more beautiful, but I dont think it ever does that. Many images may be nice looking, but skin is always more beautiful without stains.

Tattoos can cause health issues, like allergic reactions, skin infections, bloodborne diseases if you are lucky and dont have health issues, it is still like someone would paint graffiti on Mona Lisa, or turn an elf to an orc. But maybe Beauty Is in the Eye of the Beholder, it seems that modern common idea of beauty is very different than what I have.

Isn't this a matter of personal opinion -- that has no merit in debate?
