Question for everyone. The lake of fire referred to by the traditional Christian/ Catholic/ Fundi churches.

Is it literally a lake of fire? It is figurative? Other?
It is a first class human tragedy that people of the earth who claim to believe in the message of Jesus, whom they describe as the Prince of Peace, show little of that belief in actual practice.

So this to me proves the fire is symbolic.
Matthew 25:41-46
King James Version
41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

Verse 41 simply states that the fire is everlasting. It says nothing about anyone being tormented forever.

46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Verse 46 simply states that the punishment lasts forever. The punishment or wages of sin is the second death, and the second death lasts forever. Those who die the second death will never live again.

Revelation 14:11
And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

The torment is the fire, and the fire lasts forever, thus the smoke of the fire lasts forever.

If you believe the myth that all mankind is born with an immortal soul, then you can never understand the scriptures, which state repeatedly that all men will die. This false belief was instilled by Satan into mankind when he said the following:

And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: (Genesis 3:4)

Stewardofthemystery wrote: Sat May 11, 2024 10:40 am If they are being punished and tormented forever and ever by the everlasting fire, then they are still conscious of the punishment.
Revelation 20:10
And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

This verse only states that the devil will be tormented day and night for ever and ever, not anyone else!

Those on the left hand (evil men) are going to the same place as the Devil and his evil angels as is shown in Matt 25:41. This everlasting fire is the everlasting punishment that torments the souls of evil men and the spirits of evil angels forever and ever confirmed in Rev 14:11 and Rev 20:10

But believe what you want. Peace

So you do not believe that the wages of sin is death as stated in the scriptures -- as your immortal soul cannot die:

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

Likewise, you believe we already have everlasting life.

That is the first death to the physical body because of sin.

Romans 5:12
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

But in order for someone to be tormented forever and ever they have to be conscious of the torment in order to suffer the eternal punishment.

For example the rich man after physically dying was still aware and conscious of his torment in hell.

Luke 16:23-25
King James Version
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

And yes I believe I have eternal life…

1 John 5:13
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

Yes the devil will be destroyed eternally. Its what the lake of fire represents. Rev 12:12 says the devil knows his time is short.

No, the first death of every human is appointed:

Hebrews 9:27
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

So our first death is not the wages for our sins. The wages for our sins is the permanent everlasting second death which occurs upon being cast into the lake of fire:

Revelation 20:15
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

The eternal punishment for our sins is everlasting death. If the wages of sin is everlasting torment, the God is NOT Love!

His torment will quickly end with his death in the fire.

Christians own an inheritance of everlasting life:

Titus 3:7
That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

We do not yet have everlasting life. Believers are guaranteed resurrection to everlasting life at the Second Coming. That is when the covenant will be probated.

I would say it is figurative, as God often “likens” spiritual things using things seen in nature and in the natural world. It is written that God spoke by the prophets using similitudes, Jesus taught the same way.

In scripture God’s anger and wrath is “likened” to a fire that shall never be quenched. This could explain what the “everlasting fire” is mentioned by Jesus.

I believe it is literal fire specially in verse 9, fire came down from heaven that devoured them.
I chose EDNT fire definition in number 5 and 6.
Please find below;

Rev 20:9-10
9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.
10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
KJV

NT:4442
fire
1. Occurrences in the NT —
2. Meaning —
3. Fire as a part of daily life —
4. Fire as a symbol or in comparisons —
5. Heavenly fire — a) Fire in the heavenly realm — b) Fire coming from the heavenly realm to earth —
6. The fire of hell
(from Exegetical Dictionary of the New Testament © 1990 by William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company. All rights reserved.)
If the fire was literal, how can someone be tormented day and night forever and ever without getting burned up?

And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
As I understand it the "fire" is literal and the "for ever and ever" and the "eternal fire" in Jude 1:7 have the same meaning - destroyed.
See Barne's Notes commentary of "shall be tormented day and night forever".
And would you believe that Sodom and Gomorrha still burning until now?

Jude 7
7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
KJV

Revelation 20:10
And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
[And shall be tormented day and night forever] Compare the notes on Rev 14:11. All the great enemies of the church are destroyed, and henceforward there is to be no array of hostile forces; no combination of malignant powers against the kingdom of God. The gospel triumphs; the way is prepared for the final consummation.
