"Divine Intervention"

Justin Ashley wins key NHRA Top Fuel Dragster race and credits his win to "Divine Intervention." Cue this up to 40 seconds to hear him for yourselves.

For those not in the know Top Fuel Dragsters are the quickest accelerating wheel-driven vehicles on earth and cost millions of dollars to campaign.

Why would this driver think God would intervene in this race when God's busy with much more important world issues like determining which baseball team is going to win the World Series.

To be clear: Atheism is not a disbelief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of belief in gods.

I must assume that knowing is better than not knowing, venturing than not venturing; and that magic and illusion, however rich, however alluring, ultimately weaken the human spirit.

Because God works in mysterious ways.
In case anyone is wondering... The avatar quote states the following:

"I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness."

According to Matthew 10:29 and Luke 12:6, sparrows are two for a dollar (or five for two), but each individual falls or not according to God's caprice. If He's got the time to snuff birds for funsies, how could He not have time to rig a race or two?

More to the point, why would anyone in what's supposed to be an honest and honorable competition want God to intervene instead of being willing to win----or lose----fair and square?

I think it is impossible to know with absolute certainly what this individual was thinking and I dont claim to know.

An educated guess might be made based on common ideas or perceptions we have encountered personally or learnt about by other means such a through literature or journals. I have personally met people that thank God for something they have either prayed for that happened or believe that have happened against all odds. Its possible he was thinking along those lines.

Perhaps the other drivers worshiped a different god concept and he was just hoping for their death. Perhaps he just didn't want to do the killing himself, so prayed for divine intervention.

Deuteronomy 13:6-9
If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known, gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other), do not yield to them or listen to them. Show them no pity. Do not spare them or shield them. You must certainly put them to death. Your hand must be the first in putting them to death, and then the hands of all the people.

Should the driver be stoned for not killing them himself though? Why be lazy (if this was what happened) and not kill them himself? Why pray for a god to kill our fellow humans when he can do it himself? Probably just a lukewarm Christian!

Go religions!
You can give a man a fish and he will be fed for a day, or you can teach a man to pray for fish and he will starve to death.

I blame man for codifying those rules into a book which allowed superstitious people to perpetuate a barbaric practice. Rules that must be followed or face an invisible beings wrath. - KenRU

It is sad that in an age of freedom some people are enslaved by the nomads of old. - Marco

If you are unable to demonstrate that what you believe is true and you absolve yourself of the burden of proof, then what is the purpose of your arguments? - brunumb

First of all, which God (not that it necessarily matters)?

Second, if the man believes his God wants him (or allowed him) to win the race, then that is his prerogative, that is his faith.

Hardly worthy of a discussion and as far as I'm concerned, wasted thread space.
I got 99 problems, dude.
