Question about prayer

Post by CheeseNrice »

I have a question regarding prayer and "answers" supposedly from god. An example that brings about such questions are in relation to that mining disaster where so many of those miners were trapped and died.

I remember so many people gathering together at the churches and praying for the miners to be alive. Then, when they were told that all of the miners were alive, they all cheered and rejoiced proclaiming that "god answered our prayers." Now, hours later, when they found out that the miners were actually dead, how do they explain this?

Did god give them the "wrong answer"?

Did god give the same exact answer to all of those people who prayed? You mean to tell me that there was not one person there (even out of the clergy) who got the message from god that sorry, no, the miners were not alive and not coming home? Why did so many people get the wrong answer?

Did the people misinterpret what god's answer was? (in which case, it doesn't seem like prayer is of much use if you can't even reliably interpret the answer).

Did people really not get any answer at all from god, but were just deceiving themselves believing that god gave them an answer (which was wrong)?

I missed commenting on this before... So do you not see your God as all-powerful? You are saying that there are somethings he is incapable of doing? I would have thought that he knew us all so intimately he would know exactly what would take to influence us to believe in him (after all he knitted us in our mother's wombs). And because he loves us so much he would be willing to do that. Even if we don't want to believe.

Society and its morals evolve and will continue to evolve. The bible however remains the same and just requires more and more apologetics and claims of "metaphors" and "symbolism" to justify it.

Prayer is like rubbing an old bottle and hoping that a genie will pop out and grant you three wishes.

There is much about this world that is mind boggling and impressive, but I see no need whatsoever to put it down to magical super powered beings.

I think someone forgot to put quotations around this statement and credit it to the late George Carlin. What pathetic plagiarism. Oh well, nothing new from Christians - doesn't surprise me.

This little excerpt he stole from a Carlin bit was where he proclaims to be a sun worshipper because "I can see the sun. I don't know about you," Carlin says, "but if I can see something, it tends to give it more credibility, in my opinion."

Intersesting that a Christian would steal a few lines from an atheist comedian. The line that told on him the most was: "And most of this praying takes place on Sunday" - he forgot to add - ..."his day off."

Now some of you may encounter the devils bargain if you get that far. Any old soul is worth saving at least to a priest, but not every soul is worth buying. So you can take the offer as a compliment.

Does the Christian God have a male sex organ? Just curious, so I thought I might ask this question for all you Christians out there who love to write "him" and "he" with a capital 'H'.

BTW, jmac2112, are you a Rush fan? Great band, and their album 2112 is in the top 20 best rock albums of all time, IMO.
