Online Debating School - Fundamentals Class

Post by otseng »

This will be the first class for the Online Debating School. The class is open to any Christian and there is nothing you need to do to sign up. Just follow the posts, participate if you like, and take the quiz at the end.

In this class, we will cover the basics of debating on this forum - the attitudes, the rules, the guidelines, and the technicalities (bbcode, methods to follow postings, etc) of using this forum. I'll give a series of sessions during the class and open it up for questions after each session.

After I've presented all the sessions, I'll post a quiz and participants can PM me back their answers. If you pass that quiz, I'll post your name here that you passed the class.

An additional thing about composing posts. There is also a "Save as draft" button. Saving as draft will save it in a private holding area and will not be posted to a thread. To view your drafts, go to the main page and you'll see a link "View your drafts and posts" on the top right. This link will display all your drafts. To make the saved post show up in a thread, simply click on the "Submit" button. To delete the draft without posting it, check "Delete this post" and click "Submit'.

The forum is maintained by the moderators and administrators. The responsibility of the moderating team is to make sure the rules are followed. Posts that violate the rules can be reported to the moderating team by pressing the Image button on the top right of a post. This will then notify all the moderators about the rule infraction. If it's a clear cut case, a moderator will then issue a comment about the report. If it's not, the moderating team has a private discussion area to discuss how to handle it. If it is a repeat offense, the moderating team will vote on probation and eventually banishment. Moderators also have power to trash, move and edit posts.

Administrators have power to ban users and adjust token amounts. They also have power to do backend forum administration.

Private Messaging (PM) is how you can directly communicate with a member on the forum. This is accessed by the "You have no new messages" or "You have n messages" link on the top right of all pages. PMs are composed like any post. However, the only restriction is that you can't quote another person. You can only use a plain quote. (Don't ask me why)

Code: Select all

[quote] will work.
[quote="Eve"] will not work.
Any message sent to you will be in the "Inbox".
Any message you have sent, but have not been read yet will be in the "Outbox".
Any message you have sent and have been read will be in the "Sentbox".
All saved messages will be in the "Savebox".

There are special rules (in green) for PMs, so please review that.

That's it for the fundamentals class. Any questions before I give the final exam?

Here is the final exam. PM me back your answers and if you have all correct answers, I'll post your name here that you passed the class.
  1. What are the most important principles of this forum?
  2. What is the minimum number of warnings for a (non-malicious) rule violation before the probation step?
  3. If you are on probation, how many warnings is the moderating team obligated to issue before the banishment step?
  4. If you get a warning/probation from a moderator, what is the proper course to challenge it?
  5. What is the forum policy on preaching (particularly in the C&A subforum)?
  6. What is the bbcode to do a quote?
  7. How do you report a rule violation?
  8. Who are all the moderators?
