150 years of Darwin

Post by Grumpy »

We constantly see on this subforum(Science and Religion)those who argue about evolution who are...in error about what Evolution is and why we accept it as scientific fact(it did happen)and that theory to explain thats fact confirmed to the extent that any human knowledge can be. We may have knock down drag out combat over, let's call them "Subtheories" which differ with each other(Gradualism vs, Punctuated Equilibrium) within the main theory(basically, descent with modification).

Those who wish to disagree should first go here...

http://www.nsf.gov/news/special_reports/darwin/

This site explains the evidence and reasoning behind the acceptance of the theory of evolution, that the evidence is from many fields of science, not just biology, and what can be stated with a good deal of certainty and what needs further study.

I will defend what this site has to say, but you must point out EXACTLY what part of which segment of the presentation you disagree with. There is a button to recieve only a text version, if you have limited bandwith.

This thread has nothing to do with theism or lack thereof, only the facts as we know them to be by scientific investigation.

So, what do you disagree with in this presentation from the National Science Foundation, a very good source?

If others have questions or comments on this presentation, feel free, but on topic please.

What annoys me is that it is no longer debated in scientific circles; it is only on the edges like here where there are people shall we say less versed in what evolution is about. I know you are trying to keep religion out of this and keep it a purely scientific discussion, but the religious implications are inseparable from the cause of the conflict.

Modman

I guess nobody has problems with descent with modification, 4.5 billion year old Earth, 13.7 billion year old Universe, Big Bang, stellar evolution, Human descent....

That was easy!

LOL

It's not that some don't have problems with the various theories, it's that they can't refute them.

No surprises then! The sound of chirping crickets is simply deafening.

I get that a lot when challenging literal biblical claims. When a scientific notion refutes a biblical claim, then silence will be the order of the day. Let one small scientific notion support a religious claim (no matter how loosely) and the roar is deafening.

Let me show my ignorance here. I have yet to have anyone, ever show me one shred of evidence proving Darwin's "THEORY" of evolution. Just because you have 200 variations of horses they are still horses. How about 1000 variations of dog, wolf, coyote, fox etc. They are still the same family & in most cases show signs of degeneration. Please give me one example of one species changing into another!

Before you come in and criticize something, perhaps you should educate yourself on the topic first. Id suggest by starting with the definition of a scientific theory.

[sarcasm/on]Yes, the only reason you are criticizing it is because you do not understand it  [sarcasm/off]
