What is the whole point of being a Christian?
Is it just to escape hell?
It is to just "believe in Jesus"?
Is it to enter heaven?
Is it just to have something to do on Sunday mornings?
Or is it something else?
What is the whole point of Christianity anyways?

It, like all religions, has a translative function. For the vast majority of believers it gives meaning and legitimacy when faced with the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune".

Post #15Christianity is an out of control attempt to control the uncivilized and barbaric through fear and intimidation. It like all other religions sought to bring some order to chaos.otseng wrote:What is the whole point of being a Christian?

It was implemented because there were obviously many people on the planet who couldn't understand the concept of love thy neighbor as thyself or at least leave they neighbor only and in peace with out the threat of eternal suffering and damnation to curb their destructive desires.
To this day is seems that those who believe in these religions are the ones who struggle the most with their foundational concepts and are the least to follow the actual doctrince professed in their religions.
To make is simple Chrisitanity as other religions is here to control people who can't control themselves or who need the threat of hell or the promise of heaven to aid them in behaving in a constructive manner.
It helps them be taking away their actual responsibility for their actions and failures. This surely helps in their esteem.
RELIGION IS A PRISON FOR THE SEEKERS OF WISDOM
Simplicity is Profundity
Simply put if you cant prove it, you cant reasonably be mad at me for not believing it

Post #16LOL, taking controll of the perspective by placing the blame on the control of christianity? you point a finger but three are pointing right back at you.Arch wrote:Christianity is an out of control attempt to control the uncivilized and barbaric through fear and intimidation. Post #17It would be nice if your responses were understandable. Then we can have a nice debate on whatever your point is. Maybe you might want to elaborate on exactly what you are trying to say. Because I really didn't understand your statement or point.perplexed101 wrote:

Post #19Like all deeply held religious beliefs, the main purpose of the religion is to have what one believes to be a real meaningful existence. This is in contrast to atheism where one believes that there is no meaning to existence and that they should try and get everyone else to feel the same way about life.otseng wrote:What is the whole point of being a Christian?

Post #20Or rather, where one believes there is no meaning to existence that is imposed from the outside. All meaning is found within. (Still, wouldn't trying to "get everyone else to feel the same way about life" imply that there is some meaning or purpose.)harvey1 wrote:Like all deeply held religious beliefs, the main purpose of the religion is to have what one believes to be a real meaningful existence. Back to the question at hand. Isn't it besides the point to ask what the point of Christianity is? Can believing in Christ ever be justified by some pragmatic reason? Shouldn't it just be a matter of believing it because it is true, rather than believing it because it has certain benefits (such as getting oneself into heaven, because it is 'good' or finding some meaning to exist).
