Post a new topic vs. reply to an existing one?

Post a new topic vs. reply to an existing one?
Post #1I am a little confused as to how this forum operates. Should I post a new topic, even if it is similar to an existing one? Or just reply to a thread that already exists? because i dont want my reply to get lost in the midst.
