Jesus is Lord!
I have seen this on bumper stickers, TV and the internet, but I'm not quite sure what it means.
It seems to be saying that Jesus and the God are the same thing, is this correct?
Jesus is Lord?

But that is not the original meaning of the expression. To Paul, it meant "Jesus is master" our best authority for understanding things Divine and the mediator for access to the Divine.
In the OT/Hebrew Bible "LORD" always meant YHVH, Lord meant Adonai ( "my Lord, referring to YHVH)
Only in the NT does the lower case "Lord" refer to Jesus.

What may be encouraging is that even outside of the JW organization, some are rediscovering the importance of the Divine name. Some Evangelicals refer to "Jehovah" or "Yahweh" and an Evangelical couple Peter and Linda-Miller Russo have published "Proclaim His Holy Name" , and also the "Proclaim His Holy Name Bible" which is based on the KJV, but with all the "LORD"s restored to "Yehovah".
I recommend the book and their version of the Bible.
Also, Keith E Johnson's "His Hallowed Name Revealed Again". I don't think he is either a JW or an Evangelical, but this book demonstrates he really understands the importance of The Name as well. Highly recommended.
It's really great that more people are recognizing God's name. Soon the whole planet "will have to know that I am Jehovah" (Ezekiel 38:23). I long for that day.
"Pray, then, in this way: 'Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." (Matt.6:9,10, NASB)
"In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, and...it will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself endure forever." (Daniel 2:44)
"For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on his shoulders;...There will be no end to the increase of his government or of peace." (Isaiah 9:6,7)
"Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection....They will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years." (Revelation 20:6)
Psalm 15 gives us a good idea of the kind of people Jehovah will have in his new world:
1 "O LORD [YHWH], who may abide in Your tent?
Who may dwell on Your holy hill?
2 He who walks with integrity, and works righteousness,
And speaks truth in his heart.
3 He does not slander with his tongue,
Nor does evil to his neighbor,
Nor takes up a reproach against his friend;
4 In whose eyes a reprobate is despised,
But who honors those who fear the LORD [YHWH];
He swears to his own hurt and does not change;
5 He does not put out his money at interest,
Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things will never be shaken." (NASB)

Re: Jesus is Lord?
Post #42marco wrote:onewithhim wrote:
Oh, and you didn't explain how Jesus' statement at John 17:3 supports the trinity. Didn't he say to the Father, "YOU are the only true God"?
You have your theories for your own particular religious group and other people entertain other ideas, without contradicting the Bible.
If one accepts the two natures in Christ, all your quotes are easily explained.
The one you commend I read:
King James Bible
'And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.'
Jesus, according to John, was the WORD from the beginning, incarnated so that as man he might work with men. His human self constantly defers to God, whom Jesus refers to as the Father, when we know very well that this is a figurative expression, since God does not beget in the way humans do.
There is only one God, not two or three. This is what the Trinity attests.
Jesus, acting on earth as the intermediary, is the Word of God made into human flesh. We can then discuss WHY God presented himself in this way and again there are many opinions on what Christ wanted - no doubt you'll have your own. It is useless to quote Scripture and think it illustrates YOUR PRIVATE view, for it illustrates other private views as well. Basically you believe not from proof, but from faith. Unfortunately that is exactly what Muslims and others do.
All of your theocratic gymnastics aside, I don't know how much clearer it could be that Jesus deferred to the Father as God when he said to the Father, "YOU [are] the only true God." (John 17:3)
You say other people have different views "without contradicting the Bible." It's interesting that you haven't noticed that THEY DO CONTRADICT THE BIBLE. The only thing trinitarians can say about John 17:3 is : "That verse doesn't belong there," without any kind of information to back that statement up. It does directly contradict their viewpoint.
You haven't commented on ALL of the verses I cited (John 20:17?) and you haven't explained others that I have presented, such as:
I Corinthians 11:3: "I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and GOD IS THE HEAD OF CHRIST." (NASB...This was written after Jesus returned to heaven, so he wasn't a human man any more.)
I Corinthians 8:6: "Yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things..." (NASB)
I Timothy 2:5: "For there is one God, and one mediator BETWEEN GOD AND MEN, the man Christ Jesus." (NASB...This was also written when Jesus was back in heaven.)
"God" is a separate entity from Jesus Christ. How can "God" BE Jesus Christ? I don't understand how this can be dodged. "God" is the "head"---the one in the position of leadership, honor & command, or, the principal one, the chief. God is the leader of Christ. God commands Jesus STILL, as He did when Jesus was on the earth. These arguments haven't been addressed by any I've run into that believe Jesus is God.

The Divine Name KJV sounds a lot like the "Proclaim His Holy Name" Bible.
But I did find the "Names of God" Bible at Barnes and Noble. That translation uses "Yahweh".![]()
The Jerusalem Bible also uses the translation "Yahweh," as does the NEW Jerusalem Bible. Young's Literal Translation provides "Jehovah" in the O.T. wherever the Tetragrammaton occurs. As God's name is gaining more appreciation, it is ironic that the RCC instituted a recent decree that the Tetragrammaton and its translation into God's name should be REMOVED from all documents, songs, doxologies, and whatever else they call the things that they repeat during services, etc. Imagine, after almost 2,000 years, they want to remove God's name from everything. It's going to be kind of hard, I think, to remove it from where it appears on Catholic church buildings and even St. Peter's in the Vatican.
Young's literal sounds good, worth checking into.
I've also had a hard time finding the ASV, which as you no doubt know uses "Jehovah".
Until recently the ASV was listed on Bible Gateway, but they seemed to have dropped it from their list of translations.
Also, it is ironic if the RCC wants to cease using the Divine name, since the JB is a Catholic translation!
I guess the prohibition would include Catholic scholars and authors too, like the late Andrew Greeley,...I know Fr Greeley referred to "Yahweh" in his writings.
Are you certain of the RC prohibition? I've only heard about that second hand.
My theological positions:
-God created us in His image, not the other way around.
-The Bible is redeemed by it's good parts.
-Pure monotheism, simple repentance.
-YHVH is LORD
-The real Jesus is not God, the real YHVH is not a monster.
-Eternal life is a gift from the Living God.
-Keep the Commandments, keep your salvation.
-I have accepted YHVH as my Heavenly Father, LORD and Savior.
I am inspired by Jesus to worship none but YHVH, and to serve only Him.

I have to say, that I think the Jehovah's Witnesses and The Christadelphians have the most accurate interpretation of what the Bible actually says that I have encountered.
And I say this as one who was raised Catholic, and is currently a deistic leaning, monotheistic Christian.
My issues are with the idea of the supposed infallibility of the Bible, not usually* with their interpretation of it.
*( I differ with the JWs on blood atonement, their end times theology, and the "Michael the Archangel is Jesus" doctrine, but I agree on the importance of the Divine name, and the notion that the Father alone is God.)

Post #45Yes, the American Standard Version is extremely hard to find. I have the 1901 printing, and it looks like it came from 1901, unfortunately. I've thought about getting it rebound. I wonder if the 1901 distributor, the American Bible Society, if it still exists, would have any copies available.Elijah John wrote:Thanks for the leads...I already knew about the Jerusalem and New Jersualem Bibles using "Yahweh".onewithhim wrote:I went on the website for the Divine Name KJ Bible but it seems to have stopped working. I found a copy of Psalms Vol.I that my late grandfather had amongst his possessions. He was a Methodist circuit rider back in the very early 20th century. This book of Psalms is titled The Expositor's Bible, edited by W. Robertson Nicoll, D.D., apparently translated by Alexander Maclaren, D.D. It has Jehovah's name throughout! I was excited when I found this book. I have never heard of it mentioned anywhere. (The publishers were New York: Hodder & Stoughton.)
I'll look for the order to delete Jehovah's name in my pile of things to file.

It doesn't matter what the exact pronunciation is. Neither your name nor mine is pronounced the same in all languages.
Why do people want to ignore, expunge, stamp out the personal name of God?

The purpose of many new translations are to downgrade Christianity which was hated 2000 ys ago and still is by Judaic Rabbi. These things are openly written about (Obadia Yosef) and their holy books Talmud and elsewhere.
