God formed Man out of the earth. and breathed into him the breath of life. and Man became a living being. Genesis 2:7
The dust returns to the earth as it was. and the spirit returns to God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:7
You do not die when the body dies the spirit is everlasting infinite standing on the ground of eternity. Bhagavad-Gita
All things are made of spirit and body. Spirit is the infinite and eternal part ( as per Genesis) Yang to the bodies Yin. Spirit is contagious it passes from one to another. it is greater than and not completely contained by the body. It resonates out from a person to his environment like neighboring tuning forks resonate at the same frequency. That's why Jesus said love your neighbor , because it will do you good. Spirit is recognized by all faiths a common thread running through them . Spirit is in you and affecting you everywhere you go. We already live in the spiritual world.
Question for discussion :
First of all , do you believe or feel you have a spirit? (if not please don't answer 3 and 4)
Are you a body with a spirit or a spirit with a body?
Do we generate our spirit or is spirit something eternal given to us?

Re: What is spirit.
Post #22Thank you for shifting the burden of proof. You claim that there is some kind of immaterial stuff called spirit that survives death. Therefore, as the ones making the positive claim, you get to define your terms and provide evidence that your claims are valid and true.dio9 wrote:OK tell me why yo don't believe you have a spirit.
It is sufficient to say that I have yet to see any compelling evidence or logic that would lead me to believe in spirit. Biologists, those scientists who study life, also have no use for the concept of spirit.

science can physically prove brains exist , but can't physically prove the human mind exists. Where is the mind located exactly? It cannot be reduced completely to the brain and it is not a distinct substance.
It is all we sense feel taste smell see hear and touch all around us the total experience within and without we and the world around as far as we can see boundless and timeless as the universe itself. The mind can see back to the beginnings the buss of the big bang, but is not a distinct substance.

The mind is not a "thing" that is physically located in a certain part of the body. The ancient philosophers often argued about the location of the "seat of mind" and some believed it was the heart because it beat and seemed "alive." Eventually, of course, we learned that the "seat of mind" was in the head, and is nothing more than the manifestation of normal brain activity.
The brain processes sensory inputs (sight, sound, smell, touch, etc.), has memory (short term, long term, episodic), and these all interact via complex neuronal activities to create consciousness, thought, and all the other things we associate with "mind." There is no need or reason to invoke any other explanation. When the brain ceases to function, the "mind" of an individual also ceases to exist.

In human affairs the sources of success are ever to be found in the fountains of quick resolve and swift stroke; and it seems to be a law, inflexible and inexorable, that he who will not risk cannot win.

The mind might be electrical or chemical but whatever it is - it ceases to exist in the body.
At death the life of the body goes away.
People call that as the spirit.

Spirit is also creative. Invisible it precedes the creature .
Good energy and bad energy? Who makes THAT call? What such videos do unequivocally establish however is that some people are full of more hot air than others.
Some of this hippy dippy nonsense is actually based on valid fact. Humans give off heat, and heat is energy. Energy which can be seen with an infra red camera. And the air IS full of energy. We are flooded with radiation from the sun, some of which, like neutrinos, pass right through the earth at near the speed of light.
That does not change the fact that belief in the spirit, the ka, is metaphysical make believe. It's imaginary. Unless you have some physical proof that you can share, then you have simply plucked the idea from your imagination (not to mention Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) and declared it to be so.

Re: What is spirit.
Post #29Dio9, your response confuses me. Are you equating mind with spirit? Science does have a whole lot more to say about human brains than that they exist. And as far as we can tell, mind is entirely an abstract construction of the brain. With our minds we think, imagine, ponder, calculate, fear, reminisce, scheme, lust, and so many other things.dio9 wrote: [Replying to post 22 by McCulloch]

But this debate is about spirit, is it not? If spirit is the same as mind, then why use separate words? What is spirit? How is spirit different from mind? Is it possible to have mind without spirit or spirit without mind? Those who assert that spirit exists should be able to address these issues.
