A question that has haunted me all my life

Post by Dave Skummie »

How is it that every ancient isolated culture invented everything from languages to gods. If this is true, Then only two possible explanations can come from this that I can see. 1. If there is a real god then I'd say this god created a method to communicate. That would make all gods true and worshiping any would take you to the same spot at the end. 2. The simple psychology of ruling in man has created a need to worship something greater. This would mean all gods were made up by the psychological design of the human brain. If anyone has number 3. I'd be very interested. Thank you for your time. Dave

Thank you benchwarmer for your reply. I hope your name doesn't insinuate that you didn't get to play in the game. You bring up a great point. I wonder if anyone has done any studies on similarities in language. If what you're saying is true there would seem to be some remnants from the previous language in every languages. I've never studied it so I couldn't say one way or the other but the general concept is very interesting. I fully agree with what you're saying about the growth of technology and how it is influenced religious beliefs. I just have a problem with the simple concept that thousands of gods have been created throughout time and that most of them say I am the real one and the others are faults and how this came to play. There has to be an answer

Thank you Monta for your reply. I think if you look at the history of man the one thing that we can say about man is that he is a conquering species. I think one of the basic rules of conquering a society is to say that the conqueror has a direct connection to a belief that is spread through the people. That in my eye makes the choice 2 more logical to me

Thank you JP Cusick for your reply. I think you have similar thoughts. You talk about a creator. Let me just start by saying I'm not a very intelligent person and I don't have that much schooling behind me. But it would seem to me if you have a creator that means you have a beginning and that concept to me is very illogical. As we know today that matter cannot be created or destroyed and our basic analogy is that it will be here in some form forever. So the word eternal is it possible for something to go on for ever and to have it not been going on forever. I think if something is eternal in one direction it has to be eternal in the other direction as well

Hey Justin. I am unfortunately the type of person that seems to be never satisfied with an answer and keep asking why to the answers it's probably a general flaw in my character as my wife would say but I am who I am. As far as your question do I believe that. I would love to believe in the number one theory for the simple reason is it would illuminate so much violence throughout the world. If we can say that all gods are true and that they will take you to the same place and they're just a type of communication link to that particular belief. We may accept and respect others and what they believed in and except it to be true and just another method to get to the end result. Countless millions possibly billions have died over the belief of a God

Thank you 1213. I hope your name doesn't mean you came from a large family. Is your number three referrer to my number two. A modified version and a new version would simply mean man-made. I think the one thing that sticks out in my head is when someone says they have the real God and by the way it's the God of my community it's the God of my parents and it's the real God. It may be the only God out of the thousands that they have ever been introduced to or studied. That might be biased

Thank you dio9. I fully agree with you but does that mean God is real or is it just simply a perception

Thank you liamconner for reply. Your statement others worshiped the real God. Is that the very first God or the most popular God or maybe the one that in literature has covers the most angles and has the fewest paradoxes. I'm not quite sure what you mean or what you're referring to as the real God

Justin thank you for your reply. I understand what you're saying my only problem is does every God say do not murder do not rape do not steal and do not worship other gods. These seemed to be the fundamentals of all gods. In any organization you need dedication. Dedication optimizes survival and seems to be the basic rule of each author
Yes but if all gods are the same god, surely God would not mind us worshiping them? God would likely say "go ahead, worship them. They'll tell you the same thing I do because they're all me". If all gods are the same god, it wouldn't make sense for God to forbid us from worshiping them.

If all gods are the same god, then clearly God does not want us to realize this. But why hide it? Why lie to us about it? Why make it look as though all other gods are enemy gods? All this would achieve is create conflict between religions.

This is a reasonable conclusion. Intelligent beings have an almost inexhaustable need to communicate with other intelligence. Since this is the case it would be reasonable to conclude that our creator put that in us.
Dave Skummie wrote: That would make all gods true ...
How is that so? This is like saying, if Bill Gates [a man] created Microsoft, this would make all men the creator of Microsoft. You have immediately made a huge error in logic. If there is one individual who is our Creator, how does that make every idea about him correct?

Maybe your question has "haunted you all your life" because it's based on faulty logic and therefore has no answer. Fix the logic and find real answers.
