The kingdom of God.

Post by Checkpoint »

Some seem to think it is entirely future, while others give the impression they are always thinking of it as present, and to not be looking at the future in kingdom terms at all.

Jesus had much to say about the kingdom, including this:
Luke 16:

6 The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone is being zealously urged into it.
So, where do you stand as to whether it is present, future, or has both a present and a future aspect?

On what basis?

According to which scriptures?

That does not happen, you know, until Revelation 21; it is, rather, the future kingdom, which is the final result of his present reign as king.
- Can you define this "future" kingdom? (ie "The future kingdom is.....")

- Can you define the "present kingdom"?

- What is the difference between the "future kingdom" and "the present kingdom"?

- Which kingdom are we praying for when we say "thy kingdom come"?

It's a phrase of its time, no longer applicable in any way that suggests power. Kings no longer preach war and ride bravely into battle. God was seen as a heavenly king with a kingdom, presumably of stars and planets. Heaven, you recall, is the area spread out above the clouds where the Rex Tremendus would be supposed to live, as seen through the eyes of a native of the 1st century.

Adveniat regnum tuum, as we said in Latin, is one of those phrases that mean everything and nothing. May your cult spread is as close as any to the meaning. It did and it has stopped spreading, making way for a new kingdom to spread, courtesy of a desert trader.

There are many prayers in the Bible. Jesus is only recorded in the Bible to have said 'let your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven'. There is no record of anyone else saying this. So, where did you get this idea or is it your own? Is there some book of the period filled with prayers with that specific phrase?

You misunderstand. Forgive the gauche way in which I phrased my response. I mean that the words belong to a past world, not to the modern world. Talk of kingdoms no longer has the powerful oratorical effect it once had; for kings are mainly subservient, though the Arabic ones have an uncanny influence.

And what were you saying about "your cult"? I didn't get that.

Thank you for asking.

Each of your questions is a key to unlocking scriptural answers.

I intend to prepare and post them over the next few days.

The kingdom of God/kingdom of heaven, the one he specifically described when he added "Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven".

It is wherever and whenever God's will is done among or by those who are praying to Him.

This kingdom has both a present age and a future age. Each on earth, and each the one kingdom of God.

So God's kingdom is the good actions of believers. Does that sum up what you believe the kingdom of God is?

So I take it you mean that the one kingdom (reign) extends its rule into the future. Please feel free to correct me.

So there is ONE kingdom: when did it "come"? When did it start ruling?
