Re: 666
Post #2I have no idea, but I copied this from a website:NotR wrote:I am sure this topic is already posted somewere... What is the number of the beast? (i will put in my view later)
A little "detail" concerning the Biblical number "666":
Notice how Revelation 13:18 reads:
Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. Rev. 13:18
The number is NOT simply three SIXES or 6-6-6, but 600 + 60 + 6, or the number "Six hundred sixty and six".
In Revelation 13:18 we're curiously told to "count the number of the beast". How do we "count the number of the beast"? In Revelation 14:11 the mark is referred to "the mark of his NAME". In Revelation 13:17, 15:2 it's called "the number of his NAME". So the "mark" and "number" refer to his "name". We count the number of his name.
In the Greek and Hebrew language there are no "numbers" such as 1, 2, 3, or 666. The Greek and Hebrew letters are also numbers. Gematria is the adding up or "counting" (Rev 13:18), the numerical equivalent of each letter in a word or name. This was fairly common in the days before alphabetic numbers. For instance, on the walls of ancient Pompeii, someone wrote, "I love her whose number is 545".
For instance, it's common knowledge, the name of Jesus in Greek equals 888
Do today's christians think a real-live guy will woo away would-be followers of Jesus? I know churches used to teach this, but do they still?
I mean is some guy going to begin to win our affection pretending to be a peacemaker, then force us all to get some tatoo ?
I mean, George Bush pretends to be a peacemaker.........is it him?
Is it the guy in Texas with the huge following of people who actually have "666" tattooed on themselves?
I have a really hard time taking this seriously.

Post #4I think this is the only logical explanation for the concern about "666." The problem with it being the "logical" explanation is that right now it makes no sense IMO, so that would seem to contradict "logic." But, I don't classify Revelation as a book of prophecy as much as a "Revelation of Jesus Christ...to show his servants which must shortly come to pass..." (Rev 1:1.). the truth about what revelation wil mean will become clearer as it is necessary to have it revealed. Some things already make more sense then they did as the times gets closer, but until there is this "beast" actually in power, the "666" number will probably not make any sense.justifyothers wrote:

I have seen the number applied to all kinds of nonsensical things, like credit card numbers and Ronald Wilson Reagan had six letters in each of his names (which really scared a lot of people when he got shot because Revelation also mentions the "head wound" of the beast and since Reagan was the head of a country, they were just sure the end of the world was coming (That was 20 years ago). I remember something vaguely about Princess Dianas first child and how some numbers brought him to "666" and it was though that he was the coming antichrist. I think a matematical equation of some kind could relate anyone to the number if they try hard enough.

Hebrew numbers have meaning. Revelation is in Greek but uses symbols from the Old Testament.
7 is the number that means complete and perfect. (God created the world in seven days.)
6 is one less than perfect and means sinful and even often means man or men who is sinful. (Man was created on the sixth day.)
3 is the number that means most. (Holy holy holy God = Most Holy God.)
Three sixes (666) means the most sinful.
Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666. - Revelation 13:18
We are even told it is the number of a man. It is the number of every man that doesn't follow God and applies his own laws and will. Whether that be Deontology, Scientology or Secularism. (To understand that further you have to unrevel who the False Prophet and Beast are.)
What is the saddest thing about the number 666 is mans fascination with it when the next line focuses on Jesus, which is what we should focus on. However, like our sinful natures we tend to find the evil more interesting then the good.

1st of all.
"...the number of the beast, for it is MAN's number. His number is 666."Revelation13:18b
Keep this in mind... MAN's number also
2nd. I dont understand some points of view that state-
EXAMPLE1: 666 is a code numeral for satan's army... or
EXAMPLE2: 666 is a microchip code for... blah.
From the begging of this verse, God calls for WISDOM.
"This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast"Revelation 13:18a
My view is that obviously the number 666, as a number itself has no meaning. It's like a variable. It stands for some characteristic, name, spirit, event... I believe that all numerology in the Bible is given as symbols, not as amounts.
Now... before I begin, I think that this was found abundantly. Infact, it probably can be found using some big concordance... I never trried since I just kind of jumped to it accidently.
It's simple...
"The weight of gold that Solomon recieved yearly was 666 talents."I KINGS 10:14
(Solomon was a man of God. Fell at the preassure of God's blessing. God gave Solomon riches, Solomon became selfish. God gave Solom freedom(wisdom), Solomon became perverse.)
HERE IT IS AGAIN. The VARIABLE 666.
How sad is it, that when God gives a man blessing, such as riches, wisdom and power, man can pervert it and rather than never leaving God- falls away. THIS is something we can't understand. Some charecter trait that came with the forbidden fruit. It is part of SIN. It is SIN. For this unexplainable trait, a wall betwean man and the Lord, the variable 666 is used. 666 is part of man. An unspoken trait, that completes the BEAST, as it does MAN.
Note: Such variables are all over the Bible. Any repeated PARTICULIRALY stated number, is a variable.
So much emotion, but this comes from my myspace blog

Post #8It started there. Some of "revelation" began to open right there and has slowly been opening ever since.McCulloch wrote:What do you think the writer meant by the word shortly?twobitsmedia wrote:I don't classify Revelation as a book of prophecy as much as a "Revelation of Jesus Christ...to show his servants which must shortly come to pass..." 666 seems to be an hebraic code for Emperor Nero, even though it is disputed that the correct number might be 616. Nero tried to erase Christianity in the first century and is called The First Persecutor. Nero was mad. He's quite famous for starting a fire in Rome and then playing lyra on the tower while the town was burning.

A little "666" trivia:
next time you can, have a look at a barcode. When the barcode was invented, they included 3 sets of 2 thin vertical lines on the barcode, that didn't have a number underneath, that would be able to function as divisions (I assume). But if you compare it to the other lines in the barcode, apparantly the two thin lines means 6, and so in the barcode there are the 3 sets,, so it's a hidden "6-6-6"
Shock and Horror!!!!
But seriously, I have also heard that it was a reference to a roman emperor and apparantly you can get his name to equal 666 by using some form of numerology (letters standing for numbers)
