#2 God needs to rest or not? (Isaiah 40:28 vs Exodus 31:17)

Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?s ... rsion=NRSV
It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed."
Does God need to rest or not?
Proverbs 18:17 The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.

Since you accept the above(changing to the 'heart' instead of the body), then I guess you have no problem with "He does not become faint of heart or get a weary heart". Now it seems we are talking about His emotional faintness and weariness, not his physical state. So that would mean he doesn't become sad or ever have a troubled heart. Oops:

Genesis 6

Please don't assume what I think. I have not yet decided was the explanation from the link correct.

Also, I think faintness and weariness is always emotional.

I think King James or this World English translation is more accurate than what you use.

Yahweh was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him in his heart.
Gen. 6:6

And if person has different emotions, I don't think it means person has changed. Similarly, as, if person takes a different position, he has not changed.

My sincere apologies. I was assuming you agreed, but you were in fact just asking me what I thought about it.

My counter point was not that anyone had changed physically if we are talking about emotions.

Let's reset a bit.

Are the original 2 points (the ones I claim are in contradiction in the OP) talking about God physically or emotionally?

Either way, they conflict in my opinion. Either God does not 'weary' physically or emotionally (or maybe both?), yet we have passages that show just that. He both rested and grieved at different times (according to the words in the Bible anyways)

By what the Bible tells, God is spirit. I think that means He is not physical.

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
John 4:24

I think resting doesnt necessary mean that the one resting is tired. For example, you could put hammer to rest and obviously most people understand it is not because the hammer is tired, it means only pause in the work.

Grieving, I understand, means that person thinks something is sad. I dont see any reason why God should not have that kind of feelings.

You wrote: He is a just god and an unjust god

Where is that? What are you referring to?
Keeping in mind that "just" typically means fair and impartial

The just side of god: He takes vengeance upon those who deserve it.

Romans 12:19
Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

The unjust side of god:
He orders innocent women, children, and babies to be killed. Plus all their livestock.

1 Samuel 15:3
Now go fight against the Amalekites. You must completely destroy the Amalekites and everything that belongs to them. Dont let anything live; you must kill all the men and women and all of their children and little babies. You must kill all of their cattle and sheep and all of their camels and donkeys."

.
You are making a judgment that is unjust. You don't know. Because you cannot conceive of a crime warranting annihilation doesn't mean others can't or that it is unjust. Also when babies are mentioned are you pro or against abortion?

God is relatable and relating to us. A lot of the time, at least in this instance of Exodus talking about God resting after creation, God is showing us that rest is good. Humans need instruction. By resting for a day we learn from the example. It doesn't mean God was tired and needed to rest.

Also, there could be two views of God here. One is that when he creates he does use some power and it takes time to refresh, another is that his power is absolute all the time. If we go with view one then I don't see why we have to believe he grew faint and weary, maybe it is impossible because his efforts in creation never get him to that state of faint and weary.

But, personally, I think Isaiah is describing God's nature and Exodus is God demonstrating to us that it is OK to rest. The Sabbath is a symbol of the great rest we find in God and I can personally attest that I have found more rest knowing God than I ever had before.

When God rests, or loses a wrestling match with Jacob or anything else that is less than we think God should be, like dying on a cross - I think the profit is in looking in why He did that for us?

The profit is in understanding how mythology provides comfort to some. The comfort does not establish the truth of the myth only its usefulness for those who desire comfort.

Yeah. It certainly took more than two contractions to birth the Bible. Lol.

You are making a judgment that is unjust.
Don't you think that taking vengeance upon those who deserve it is just? If not, why Not? Doesn't "deserve it" pretty much suggest that it's just? OF COURSE IT DOES because "deserve" indicates worthiness.

And don't you think that ordering innocent women, children, and babies to be killed, plus all their livestock is unjust? If not, why not? Doesn't "innocent" pretty much of suggest that it's unjust? OF COURSE IT DOES because no extenuating circumstances are even suggested to make one think otherwise. *Sheesh!*

You don't know.
I don't know what?

Because you cannot conceive of a crime warranting annihilation doesn't mean others can't or that it is unjust.
Who do you think you are telling anyone what they can and cannot conceive, God? You have absolutely no idea of what I can and cannot conceive of.

Also when babies are mentioned are you pro or against abortion?
I go along with your god, who sees fit to abort 10-15% of all pregnancies through miscarriage. If people see fit to thank god for their newly born daughter, which they commonly do, doesn't that mean he's seen as having been involved in the success of the pregnancy? Sure it does. So doesn't it also stand to reason that he's also responsible for their nascent young daughter being miscarried---something an omnipotent god could have easily prevented. Sure it does. Your god is pro-abortion. :joy:

[Replying to Tcg in post #18]

I believe God is working within a fallen world of sin, I don't believe he accepts it or condones it.

So are you saying killing babies is just or unjust?
