Lack of knowledge of the Bible?

Lack of knowledge of the Bible?

It is not uncommon in these debates for Apologists attempting to defend the Bible to be (or claim to be) unaware of significant Bible passages, and to be enlightened by Non- or Ex-Christians. Example:
OnceConvinced wrote:

It does. And they can even beat their indentured servants too.

Luke 12:47-48 (OK to beat indentured servants)

Exodus 21:20-21 (Ok to beat slaves just as long as they don't die within a couple of days.
Is it rational for a person to attempt to defend the Bible when they demonstrate (or claim) to be unaware of significant, and often poignant, passages?

Does such ignorance or willful ignorance damage / destroy the credibility of the defense?

How does beating slaves (or others) align with the Golden Rule or with 'Love thy neighbor as thyself'?

Do you want to be beaten?

Is beating a slave (or others) and expression of love?

In English, maybe. Translating from Arabic gives a different opinion.
What in English maybe? I have no idea what you are talking about.
Willum wrote: Why pick on that one? That ONE? I listed several, and the theocratic Israel is in play... not them. Nice try though. Back to topic.
Why that one? Because that one (Iran) is the most theocratic country that exists today and you said that is not theocratic.

You see, if a Satan being existed, Tam, and you were to ask him how to reply to the post, he would have advised you to reply exactly as you did.
Change the subject, make clever puns, pretend that you can understand the Bible better than anyone else, and mis-direct the topic.

Ignore the evils of the book, and pretend the rest of them don't exist.
As if we can't read them for ourselves.

It is amazing to me that people not only have lack of knowledge of the Bible, but pretend not only they, but their audience can't understand their book. As if there can't be multiple interpretations, and God wouldn't know of multiple interpretations.

It seems to me that the Bible is evil, the one who wrote it must be evil, and it must also appeal to people who use lies and other deception to justify it as good.

I mean, who can claim the Bible doesn't endorse slavery, and say it is a good book?
Same of rape, and so on?
Only an evil person worshiping an evil deity, deluding themselves in the name of Pride, Vanity, Sloth would think any of this were good, and construct a deliberate ignorance of the Bible, to justify it.

You keep repeating things like this as if you might be trying to get a rise out of me, Willum. Just in case you prefer not to waste your time, you should know that such antics are not going to work with me. I find them silly and desperate and meaningless.

The topic of the thread is 'lack of knowledge of the bible'. That is the topic I addressed.

Some people might not be able to stop themselves from 'going there', Willum, but the topic of the thread was not 'is the book evil.'

Peace again to you.

I am not trying to get a rise out of you. I don't know you to see the effect. There are two possible effects I would like to see:
1. You can provide a defense or refutation for what is an observable and logical deduction based on what are the assumed characteristics of Satan.
2. The hope that your eyes will be opened to the evil the Bible promotes under a veil of pretty-sounding words.

Case in point:
The topic of the thread is 'lack of knowledge of the bible'. That is the topic I addressed.
I do not see you doing anything other than distracting from it.

The book is evil. To deny this, is to not have good knowledge of it.

If Jesus was around today, and not long dead as I believe him to be, I wonder if he would be amazed at the things attributed to him by the gospel writers, much of which aren't in the least bit credible?

OnceConvinced wrote: By the way, I'd like to see you justification for Luke 12
I think I have answered to the rest of your post in other posts, so I answer in this post only to the Luke 12. And I assume you are speaking more specifically about this:

But if that servant says in his heart, 'My lord delays his coming,' and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken, then the lord of that servant will come in a day when he isn't expecting him, and in an hour that he doesn't know, and will cut him in two, and place his portion with the unfaithful. but he who didn't know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with few stripes. To whoever much is given, of him will much be required; and to whom much was entrusted, of him more will be asked.
Luke 12:45-47

I think that is an interesting scripture. Person who beats servants is not good. But on the other hand, person who punishes that bad person is good. Is it possible that violent action can be acceptable and not acceptable? Is it ok, if police use force, but not if criminal uses force? I dont accept force when it is criminal force, but I can accept lawful force, if it is against people who are truly criminals.

I dont know any scripture in the Bible that says: it is ok to beat people.
Zzyzx wrote:Using knowledge of the Bible, does it okay the beating of slaves (and non-slaves) or does it not?
I think beating is not okay in the Bible. And reason why I think so is that there are punishments for it. And as you point out, there is the commandment, love your neighbor
Zzyzx wrote: How does beating slaves (or others) align with the Golden Rule or with 'Love thy neighbor as thyself'?

I think Love your neighbor as yourself is the perfect law. And I think it would be against it to beat someone. All though, it may be that in some case beating could save person from greater harm, which is why I think it is not necessary always bad. However, it is difficult to know when it would really be beneficial truly. Maybe there is always a better way.

This is not a police officer enforcing the law. This is a servant owner beating his servant because he didn't do as he was told.

Are you saying its ok to beat up a servant just because he doesn't do what his master tells him to do?

On one hand you're saying it's not ok and on the other hand you're saying it is. This verse clearly endorses the beating.

I'm guessing that if you employ staff and they don't obey your rules that you'd be okay with giving them a good beating?

Society and its morals evolve and will continue to evolve. The bible however remains the same and just requires more and more apologetics and claims of "metaphors" and "symbolism" to justify it.

Prayer is like rubbing an old bottle and hoping that a genie will pop out and grant you three wishes.

There is much about this world that is mind boggling and impressive, but I see no need whatsoever to put it down to magical super powered beings.

The bible has God commanding the obliteration of entire cities, while keeping the virgin females alive. It orders the killing of witches and people who worship foreign gods. It orders the stoning to death of people. Hundreds of instances where it tells you to kill your neighbour.

A couple of times it tells you to love them.

Yeah, as we are learning in modern society there are better ways to enforce rules than beating people up. It's a pity that the god of the bible has never been able to come up with better ways. It's always the violent approach with that god. Order a death. Send a natural disaster. Order a beating.
