The tree of truth

Post by Waterfall »

I have been reading the story about Adam and Eve and now I cannot understand what people are talking about...eating of the tree of life? According to this story God do not want people to eat of the tree of life? Is that not why God did this:
After he drove the man out, he placed on the east sidee of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
It seems like God do not want humans to live forever, so there can be no talk about an resurrection of humans. God just want humans to die and perish. Because they did not obey. End of story.

But the story keeps on going? Why is that?

There are many interpretations of the figurative meaning. Some believe it relates to the coming of Christ, as a tree giving the fruit of eternal life, by his death and resurrection. Others think there was only one tree.

I should imagine that there is no specific place where this tree might have been; the message is communicated figuratively but the communicator didn't help us to understand the meaning. A pity.

You will know that in Norse mythology there is a sacred ash tree, Yggdrasil, whose branches extend into heaven.

RESPONSE: It's a fictional story that people kept adding to.

I'm planning to write one too. You'll be able to recognize mine though. All the chapters begin with the phrase "once upon a time..." ;)

Exactly. And this explains everything leaving nothing unexplained. There's nothing more to explain once we recognize that these are fictional stories.

The only time explanations are required is when we try to support the idea that these stories could actually represent some actual God. And those explanations are call "apologies" for these stories. And the apologies are never compelling or convincing. In fact, the overwhelming majority of apologies actually introduce new contradictions and questions that then also need to be explained.

So recognizing that the Biblical stories are fiction answers everything with nothing left unexplained. It's the only reasonable answer.

You say "because they did not obey". What would have happened to Adam and Eve if they DID obey?

To illustrate: Imagine a mother denys her child a treat, maybe a cookie because he doesn't obey her. If the child does obey would she not give the child the promised cookie?
If God kept Adam and Eve away from the tree of life "because they did not obey" what do you think God have done if they did obey?

It is a good point.

I would have to say...they did not obey...that seems to be the reason for not allowing humans to eat from the tree of life.

Good well done. Okay so what do you think would have happened if Adam and Eve HAD obeyed God?

According to this story...they would problely have eating from the tree of life at some point. And that is why we can ask...why not begin with eating of the tree of life?

Could Adam fall without Eve or Eve without Adam?

There are questions to be ask.

That is correct; so if they got eternal DEATH because they DIDN'T obey, what do you think they would have received if the DID obey?

You rightly pointed out that that they didn't get to eat from the tree of life because they did not obey. What does that tell us?
To illustrate If you want a car but the manufactuer says he will not give you the car because you didn't give him any money for it, does this not means that the car is not free? You only get it on condition you pay for it. You cannot have the car unless you keep the conditions.
If God didn't give Adam and Eve eternal life unless they obeyed Him, does that mean life is given on condition or without conditions?
