I believe the Bible approves of spanking kids as a form of discipline (Proverbs 13:24). And once upon a time not too long ago, spankings were common in America, including schools. Now I'll attempt to distinguish spanking from child abuse, if possible. The difference I think is doing it in a controlled way or out-of-control way. By that I mean, spanking one area of the body (the hands, etc) as opposed to spanking all over or anywhere on the body and out of anger/rage.
Debate question:
1. Are disciplinary spankings right or moral?

Final Enigma - Perhaps there should be a poll to determine whether being smacked as a child leads to problems with attachment then? I am also not close to my parents anymore and on occasion still feel a large amount of anger towards them and myself. I am also known for my large amounts of patience and level head but do wonder if relationship problems are created in my life by prior events and a residual distrust of showing any form of weakness. Be interested to see if anyone else shares this experience...

Also - what position do you take for smacking your own children, whether current or future?stupidstupid wrote:Final Enigma - Perhaps there should be a poll to determine whether being smacked as a child leads to problems with attachment then? Personally I would be invalid Data for your poll. The reason I'm not close to my parents is because I have autism.
I will note though, that since I've found my significant other, my lack of attachment to my parents had almost made my romantic relationship sweeter, because she's been able to give me some of the things my parents should have but never did.
Regarding spanking my own children... That's complicated. I'd they inherit my autism, it would be simply stupid to spank them. I have no attachment to the idea of spanking, and would prefer to avoid it anyway, but whether I do depends on what information I can find on the subject at the point when I am having kids.

We do not hate others because of the flaws in their souls, we hate them because of the flaws in our own.

I don't believe that data from you would be invalid... you state that you have a good attachment to your partner, therefore your data should perhaps be explored in the same way as anyone else - purely because you are able to form attachments and your data would not be completely anomalous. Sorry - really waffling now.FinalEnigma wrote:Personally I would be invalid Data for your poll. The reason I'm not close to my parents is because I have autism.

You have a very good point about smacking an autistic child, my sister is autistic (as is my daughter) and to smack her just made her smack my parents...

If we put statistics in the global perspective thenAngel wrote:More information..Source: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=3924024#.TrN9YGH7Ps0In all 50 states, parents are legally allowed to spank their children. But in 29 states it's illegal for a teacher to practice corporal punishment, including spanking.
Source: http://articles.cnn.com/2008-08-20/us/c ... s?_s=PM:USCorporal punishment in schools remains legal in 21 U.S. states and is used frequently in 13: Missouri, Kentucky, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Florida, according to data received from the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education and cited in the report.
My sum up...
Assuming that laws have not changed, corporal punishment is allowed in all 50 states in US. Corporal punishments in school are allowed in 21 states in the US. I've read on other websites from private organizations or personal sites that the law distinguishes between spanking and abuse. Here's some examples of criteria for justified spankings:
I got these 3 points from here - http://www.religioustolerance.org/spankin2.htm-Be necessary (i.e. there it must be in response to a child's negative behavior).
-Be reasonable, not excessive, in the judgment of a third party -- e.g. a Child Protective Services representative, or a law enforcement officer
-of reasonable intensity in a parent-child situation
"194 countries have ratified, accepted, or acceded to it (Convention on the Rights of the Child) including every member of the United Nations except Somalia and the United States.[4][6] Somalia had announced that it would eventually do so."

Spanking is not a method of disciplining a child, it is a method to release temporary psychological and sometimes psychiatric stress of the parents by physically abusing their children.
