Matthew
Chapter 23
But be not ye called Rabbi:
for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
All them Christians (in name only) that you see
with your own two eyes and hear with you own two ears
who call themselves Rabbi and insist that you also with them
disobey the written word of God and call them Rabbi...
Other than calling Jesus Rabbi
according to the written word of God
all these people are in disobedience to the
commandment of Jesus Christ.
But be not ye called Rabbi:
for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.

Re: The Rabbi Deceivers of Christianity
Post #11Thank you for the clarification. The first question is who is the "ye". It is the disciples. Thus, he is saying that, unlike in other rabbinic shuls, His followers were not to speak of being followers of anyone but Him. I do not see this precluding people from engaging in discussion and formal teaching. It is just that there should be no appeals to authority apart from Himself. Discussions and teachings are to be accepted or rejected based on their merits.TLIG wrote:

I was referring to the above verses. They are playing on words to make a point that isn't sensibly expressed. The intention is probably that one should not listen to imposters.

Post #16How about "call no one "Lord" for you have one LORD, even YHVH who is in Heaven"?marco wrote:
Oscar Wilde handled the paradox and the outrageous pronouncement better than poor Matthew. I believe one is not to be called father either, since God has usurped that title.
There is an element of stupidity in vetoing the use of rabbi: it is meant to raise Christ to Olympian heights. Call no one Jesus would be another prohibition but that would mean some famous footballers would stay nameless.
Verses like this are best ignored if one is to give the gospels any credibility.
My theological positions:
-God created us in His image, not the other way around.
-The Bible is redeemed by it's good parts.
-Pure monotheism, simple repentance.
-YHVH is LORD
-The real Jesus is not God, the real YHVH is not a monster.
-Eternal life is a gift from the Living God.
-Keep the Commandments, keep your salvation.
-I have accepted YHVH as my Heavenly Father, LORD and Savior.
I am inspired by Jesus to worship none but YHVH, and to serve only Him.

Post #17The intent is culturally implied. Yeshua is talking to His disciples and it is talking about rabbinic authority within his shul. The point is that His followers are not to identify themselves with anyone other than Yeshua, i.e papists and Lutherans.marco wrote:"But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven."bluethread wrote: What specific verse or verses in Mt. 23 are you saying are "arrogant and silly".

Post #18The problem is that He is specifically speaking to His disciples in that passage. Unless you are using "hear the voice" as referring to discipleship, then the verse would not apply.TLIG wrote:" Ye " is anyone who hears the voice of Jesus Christ.bluethread wrote:Thank you for the clarification. Just to add to this, the term Rabbi, didn't exist at Christs time. It came about after the Temple was destroyed and the Jews scattered. The Rabbi were the repeaters of the Tanakh, orally. Its roots are in the Hebrew for repeater. From what I read of Judaism, it was not a common word until the late 500s.
