Why does atheism have a suicide problem?

Depression is a serious problem with in the greater atheist community and far too often, that depression has led to suicide. This is something many of my fellow atheists often dont like to admit, but it is true. I know a lot of atheists, myself included, would all like to believe that atheists are happier people than religious believers and in many ways we are. But we also have to accept the reality that in some very important ways we are not.

I also noticed some, not all, atheists justify their smoking as a slow suicide as a reaction to the absurdity of life. Kind of like a protest.

Perhaps you are projecting this absurdity of life on to atheists? I'm sorry if you feel that life is absurd. I hope that you can look to family and friends and find meaning. Projecting absurdity on to some atheists is not a way to deal with a life you find to be absurd though, if that is what is truly happening here.

Either way, your words are as meaningless as me saying that some Christians smoke to get to heaven sooner. Both statements would be meaningless to make.

I’ve been through similar doubts and found it helpful to step back and re-read some passages slowly, trying not to force meaning but just letting it sink in over time.
