Hope and faith

Post by FinalEnigma »

Apologies for jumping on a new member, but this was posted in another thread
Hope and Faith are irrelevant.
Questions for debate;

1)Is hope irrelevant?
2)Is faith irrelevant?

My answer to 1 would be a most emphatic no.

Beyond the obvious extremely significant effects of positive thinking upon negative situations (such as cancer patients who have hope VS those who are pessimistically waiting to die.), there are many, many other reasons why hope is important. If nobody had hope, they would never try to change negative situations, because they would have no hope that they would succeed. people would never fight overwhelming odds, depressed people would commit mass suicide, and all seriously ill patients would as well, since they do not have hope.

Hope can give a person strength they wouldn't otherwise have to fight for something that is important.

regarding number two: What kind of faith? You cannot rule out all faith as irrelevant. theistic faith you could try, but you would still have a problem.

Well, it has never really been fun to buy alcohol. Now drinking it on the other hand is another story. :D

Pertaining to the questions stated in your first post.

Hope and Faith can be relevant to some people, however, others such as myself, may not need the two. Is that a fair statement and conclusion to make?
FinalEnigma wrote:Well, I'm still hesitant to accept this.
Then I move to declare that... I don't know. Estorenbenterium?
ConfinedIX wrote:To answer your question more directly; yes, I believe that Hope is neither present in S2 or S1.

This believes me to draw the conclusion that you are saying that Hope is the same as Positive Thinking. I base this on the fact that all I see in S1 or S2 is Positive/Negative Thinking.
FinalEnigma wrote:I wouldn't say that they are the same, but that they overlap strongly, yes.
This would move to indicate that there are different types of Hope. Hope based on facts or logic and Hope based on wish-fullness. Agree or Disagree?

Balderdash!... I concur

I hereby declare that I remove the do from my sentence to make it sound less stupid. I also declare that your sentence needs to be changed as well.

I control my emotions rather well.
I have extremely good control over my emotions.

I propose that the above sentences are acceptable. Concur/Deny?

Also, I attest that, "Ugh, it's like there's a party in my mouth and everyone's throwing up" about rotten tomatoes (Futurama; Parasites Lost, Fry).

Bah. That's no fun either. At least, I've never enjoyed it terribly much. Alcohol seems to make me paranoid. Someday I'll have to try it again and see if I gave it a fair chance. I haven't drank in quite a while.

I was more thinking hope(verb) and hope(noun).

Hope(verb) I admit is pretty pointless. I could hope for a million dollars in gold to fall out of the sky and crush my house all I want, but that won't make it(or anything else) happen.

hope(noun) is the possibility of favorable outcomes, or belief in the possibility(or high probability) of favorable outcomes, depending on the usage. (as with "he has no hope" being an example of the first usage.)

I should know better, being a writing tutor(well, I do know better, I was just being lazy).

and yes, they are reasonable sentences(unlike this one), though personally I prefer "I have extremely good control of my emotions." rather than 'over my emotions'. That may be a style thing though. I also wouldn't use 'extremely' there either, but that's definitely a style thing.
Also, I attest that, "Ugh, it's like there's a party in my mouth and everyone's throwing up" about rotten tomatoes (Futurama; Parasites Lost, Fry).
Not being one who has tried rotten tomatoes, I'll have to take your word for it.

I've never been paranoid while drinking. :) Now, smoking on the other hand, yes.

I can concur to this slightly.

Neither have I. I was simply trying to throw in something humorous.

Can you also concur that the second meaning of the hope(noun)(a belief in the possibility or high probability of a favorable outcome) is useful and positively affects things, given this definition of it rather than the more nebulous one we were using before? or do you still not buy it?

I will concur that it is more reasonable definition that the one previously used. Also, it may be useful and positively affect things, however there is no guarantee that said will work for everyone.

Indeed. And we've certainly got another interesting person around here.
