Ad Hom Enforcement

What is this forum's policy on personal attacks, and what qualifies as a personal attack? Are we supposed to report such attacks?

We have no specific definition of a personal attack. However, an ad hominem argument may simply be a logical fallacy without being a personal attack.

Personal attacks are not allowed. What constitutes a personal attack has been left to the moderators to decide. If a moderator makes a call that you disagree with, then PM any moderator and we will discuss it among ourselves.

It can be rather tricky. You are stupid clearly is a personal attack. That is a stupid idea could be a personal attack or it could be a statement of opinion or it could be stating the obvious. It depends on context.

Personal attacks are strictly forbidden on this forum. As McCulloch said, what qualifies is what a moderating team member decides. Usually it's pretty obvious. If it's not obvious, we can discuss among ourselves to make a decision. To report an attack, use the "!" button at the top right corner of the post.

Thank you.

Why do some posts not have the "!" button? How do you report one of those posts?

You cannot report yourself. Which others have the button missing?

If it's already reported, it won't show up either.

Why cant people report themselves before anyone else does? Would it not be easier to report oneself and tell the moderators I just called a spade a spade so the spade might just get offended and report me?

If you are intending to break the agreement that you made when signing up for this site, why not just quit now? If you don't think that the post you have made is a violation of the rules, then don't report it. You need not anticipate others' false reactions.

I never intend to break rules and neither do I intend to offend anyone but I do intend to speak the Truth which is on my heart and mind. Is there a law against speaking the Truth or only when it might happen to offend others? If there is a law against speaking the Truth that offends others then how do we know if people will be offended by the Truth if we don't anticipate their reactions? We must anticipate that people might get offended by the Truth because that is the nature of people, is it not? That's the reason most people tell lies is it not? They do it so as not to offend people with the Truth.

I am merely saying that it is impossible to never offend anyone, no matter what a person says or does, someone else can take offense at it if they decide to do so.
