It's fantasy if not narcissism to imagine that one can improve the world.
Well, the subversive intent behind the question was partly to offer people a reason for being beyond their own gratification. In the British army, that reason has always been 'for Queen and Country'. That may seem a little dated, these days, but it has engendered no end of sacrifices, both large and small. For the rest of us, if we are looking for a cause to live and die for, I can think of none better than 'to Save the World for the Common Good'. It is interesting how liberating such idealism can be. And it is, as well, I have noticed, a short route out of depression and into happiness (by which I mean a deep and lasting contentment). On these grounds I commend such idealism to the forum, however 'narcissistic' it might, on first familiarity, seem. Of course, one first must leave behind the corrosive cynicism that afflicts the civilised world, and be prepared to get involved in projects greater and more important than oneself.

And it might even be that through such thinking, we can actually achieve our goal.

Best wishes, 2RM.

Idealism kills far too many. All the best evil actors are idealistic first, then they act on those ideals second. Then the British soldiers have to go to work to clean up the mess.

Looking for head to head debates, especially on contradictions or the Trinity. PM me your topic.

Life in itself is a dangerous thing, with a 100% mortality rate. The issue is, do we want something to live and die for, or just a complacent comfort that serves no-one any good, least of all ourselves? The meaning of life may well be beyond our capacity to discern, but we can at least find meaning in life.
