Is Communion a Sign of a Christian?

Is communion a sign of a Christian?
Can we say that a Christian generallywould want to take communion when it is offered?
Of course if one’s heart is not right with God, communion might be denied, but my question concerns the general attitude of a person. If the general attitude of a person is “I refuse to take communion”, would we still consider them a Christian?
I will add that one of the reasons communion is refused is because they doubt (or deny) the divinity of Jesus.
The individual I am discussing is not merely hypothetical.
It is George Washington (or so I will argue).
