Hey everyone

I guess I should introduce myself.

I am a Buddhist with strong atheistic beliefs. I guess you could just call me a spiritual atheist.

I am very big on philosophy and it is pretty much all I ever think about. If someone sees me daydreaming, most likely I am trying to figure out how the universe works or putting together a solution for some long debated question.

My favorite subjects have always been associated with the arts, but I tend to be best in Science.

I'm not too good with explaining about myself so that's pretty much all I could think of at the moment. Anyways...yeah...peace.

That sounds like me!

For instance, my wife will be talking about her shopping escapades while I just stare off into the distance. Then she'll look at me and ask, "What are you thinking?" I usually respond, "Oh, nothing." But, in actuality, I'm thinking about some topic here on this forum.

Haha cool. Putting your mind to work is usually more fun than just thinking about random things.

Hi Crane - I too am an atheist with a spiritual bent. Describing the sort of 'spirit' that an atheist may be drawn to has been discussed on a few occasions. Your comments, opinions would be welcomed. There have been several threads - notably Atheism & Spirituality

Or feel free to start off your own.

I thought Buddhism was nontheistic rather than atheistic. There's a difference: an atheist has an investment in proving there isn't a God. A non-theist simply does not require a God at the center of his non-theology. In Buddhist terms, its a question of attachment.

I admire Buddhism and have learned much from it about my own religion. I practice Christianity because I'm wired for it by culture, and steeped in its wisdom literature. I am not, however, a fundamentalist, and respect all religions equally.

I especially admire the Buddhist concept of emptiness. It took me a long time to understand it, and it wasn't until I read Chogyam Trungpa's Meditation in Action that I got what it was. The image that he used was that if you were truly empty, you could hold everything, event the stars. This involves less preoccupation so that you can take in the world. That was really wonderful for me.

Blessings.

Ah yes. I guess I meant to say non-theistic. However I am an atheist with many Buddhist beliefs. Same goes for my Buddhist side because I am a Buddhist with many atheist beliefs.

I too, learn many things from Buddhism, but I have also been 'blessed' to grasp many of the concepts before I actually knew that it was my belief. Buddhism has been granting great insight and wisdom to the world for many years and that is a huge reason why I love and admire it. Anyways I am looking forward to discuss more things with you later. You seem like an interesting person. So anyways bye for now.

Because I don't believe in Christianity and Buddhism shows tolerance of all beings, detachment of disadvantaging human psychological needs and basically represents what I believe in, while Christianity does not.
