Greetings to DC community

Post by Ashman »

Hello everyone, I've been perusing the DC forums for a few days and have found it delightful. I hope to contribute many ideas in the spirit of equitable debate/conversation.

First relevant matter I guess would be my POV & background:

My family traditions center on Christianity (non-denominationally), however, I consciously departed from that religion in early adolescence.
I am generally interested in the beliefs and perspectives of others.
I cannot pinpoint my personal religious beliefs (if any), but have many biases related to cosmology, theology, mysticism, metaphysics, mythology etc...
My interests include various forms of:
Anthropology, sociology, many sciences, physics, many technologies, philosophy, ad nauseum...

A favorite writer of mine (Einstein), as I remember his meaning, wrote that Truth itself may not be as important as the process of seeking it.

I think that perhaps there are many truths subjective and relative, perhaps our greatest task is to determine the absolutes and reconcile our subjective experiences with them.

Thanks for the warm welcome otseng & wrekk.

Wow, I must be a confused individual. Hoping to find a group membership I was happy to find Freethinkers on the list, but alas after reading it's description and the one on wikipedia I guess perhaps I'm not of the persuasion. :(

I've considered freethought a philosophical ideal for several years beginning in highschool. To me it has represented something which can be saught and disciplined unto myself but I've always considered it more of a constantly refined (unattainable) modus operandi or self-discipline than a label. I've been living in a hole thinking that no labeled doctrine out be attached to it...

The devil's in the [definition of terms].

Hi, Ashman. Welcome to the forum. How about the 'One who belongs nowhere' usergroup?

Welcome Ashman, glad to have you with us.

Society and its morals evolve and will continue to evolve. The bible however remains the same and just requires more and more apologetics and claims of "metaphors" and "symbolism" to justify it.

Prayer is like rubbing an old bottle and hoping that a genie will pop out and grant you three wishes.

There is much about this world that is mind boggling and impressive, but I see no need whatsoever to put it down to magical super powered beings.

This membership thing is making my brain hurt, thanks for the good recommendation

Logically One who belongs nowhere would preclude joining any other groups, but... there is always a 'but' and I always find it. Unless the mods find it objectionable I'll join a couple other groups too.

No cynical optimist group?

That's a good point. As an alternative, accruing a certain number of tokens (I forget for the moment how many) allows you to create your very own usergroup. I'll donate you a few now to help you on your way if that is what you would like to do.
