Post #1I think most people on this forum are from the USA (correct me if i'm wrong) so i have a question: what do you think of Europe? I don't really know why i ask this question but it just always fun to know hop people think of you ( and of your country). I'm from Belgium, to be specific.

Re: What do you think of Europe?
Post #2I think that you are right. I'm from Canada. It's that large land mass just north of the USA. Our national sport is making fun of Americans (not North Americans or South Americans but Americans, citizens of the world's only superpower, exempt from international law, saviour of the free world.)Camus wrote:I think most people on this forum are from the USA (correct me if i'm wrong)
Europe is old. Québec City is only 400 years old and our oldest department store was only founded May 2, 1670. France was already on its fourteenth Louis back then.Camus wrote:so i have a question: what do you think of Europe?
Like Belgium, we are officially bilingual (English and French), a nominal monarchy with a parliamentary democracy.Camus wrote:I'm from Belgium, to be specific.

I enjoy being in Europe and not being in Europe at the same time.

Post #4Nice place to visit, but those French have a different word for EVERYTHING.Camus wrote:I think most people on this forum are from the USA (correct me if i'm wrong) so i have a question: what do you think of Europe? “What do you think science is? There is nothing magical about science. It is simply a systematic way for carefully and thoroughly observing nature and using consistent logic to evaluate results. So which part of that exactly do you disagree with? Do you disagree with being thorough? Using careful observation? Being systematic? Or using consistent logic?

I'm an American, but I live in France. I've lived in Europe for the past 10 years (Italy - UK - France).
I prefer European mentality over American mentality. When I had to choose which one my kids would grow up in, it wasn't a hard choice.
The last thing this world needs is more Americans. Especially ones with no idea that something exists outside of their little country.
Can I make fun of my own country and nationality or is still in bad taste?

I was stationed in Butzbach, and then Kirsch Goens Germany in '83-85. I loved it! Most of the people I met were great, fun loving, and decent. I'm gonna mention the bad apples only to say I really didn't see any, and if I did they have not stayed with my memories.
I really only have an 'opinion' about Europe, as I have no other data than what I read and hear and what have you. I think Europe is full of great people who try their best to get along with each other. I am concerned about the influence Islam is having, but overall my opinion of Europe is a great bunch of folks.
Belgium I don't know much about, but I've not heard of anything bad, so to me that means they are good folks too.

It's just occurred to me that this might not make much sense without an explanation. So -Fallibleone wrote:I enjoy being in Europe and not being in Europe at the same time.
Although North America sees the UK as being part of Europe (after all we are in the EU), many Brits don't agree. They speak of Europe as that continent over there, over the Channel. There. Better.
Oh - can I also just mention something that's been bugging me? It appears that Americans think we work in the metric system over here. Not so. We're still hanging on in there with imperial for weights and measures (we've just had our back garden measured for the purpose of getting a new fence - all done in feet and inches), and definitely deal more with miles than with kilometres. Can someone please tell Matt Groening? Also, tell him that English people don't speak like Dick Van Dyke.

I know that you explained this, but it certainly looks like A and not A. Is Iceland European? Is Hawaii American?Fallibleone wrote:I enjoy being in Europe and not being in Europe at the same time.

See Iceland to me is Scandinavian before it is European but then I'm old and suffer slightly from 'In my day...' syndrome. And they are allowed to enter the Eurovision Song Contest, as is the UK (and Israel
).

It seems that the UK is not ready to be a 'proper' European country - we hang on to the imperial system of weights and measures, and as far as I know we're one of only a few countries left in Europe which has so far held on to its currency and not adopted the Euro. Even Eire has switched. Basically it is in the EU but still still sees itself as somewhat apart from continental Europe. Personally I like the idea of being a European.
