Was Jesus crucified on the Passover, of earlier?

Post #1

Post by polonius »

The question is whether the Sabbath which came the next day was a Saturday Sabbath or the Passover Sabbath or both. I believe that all the evidence is unanimous that Jesus was crucufied on the day before the Passover. Matthew confirms this, as in Matthew 27:62 he says that the day after the crucifixion was the "one after Preparation Day" (ie preparation day for the Passover.

And John has no Eucharist account at the last supper.

How do you know that he rose before daylight?

On which day of the week?

How do you reconcile that with Luke 24:21?
Good question.

On the face of it, perhaps with some difficulty, if at all!

To be revisited.

Yes, but how does that answer your question about "before daylight"?

And how does it answer my question, "on which day of the week"?

Exactly. Checkpoint, I'm still trying to understand what you mean. Could you use my chart and show me where I'm going wrong?
(Wed) 3pm {1st day (light) JC is dead} ---> [sunset] {end of first day} {beginning of 2nd day Thurs} NIGHT#1 //MORNING

(Thur) 3pm {2nd day (light) JC is dead } ---> [sunset] {end of second day} {beginning of 3rd day Fri} NIGHT#2//MORNING

(Friday) 3pm {3rd day (light) JC is risen} ---> [sunset] {end of third day} {beginning of 4th day} NIGHT#3//MORNING

How can a third third night take him into --> the third daylight?

JW
Evening and(then) morning; remember?!

Thanks for your chart, and for your grace.

It is complete 3 days and 3 nights, approximately 72 hours in total.

An overlap or underlap at either end may be, but is not part of the 3 and 3 as to their placement as being complete, not partial but full days.

That is, the countdown starts at sunset Thursday and ends at sunset Saturday.

What do you think, JW; does that clarify or does it complicate?

Yes and my question is how do you get 72 hours and still be risen on "the third day (light)"?

How do you get a third night and still be risen on "the third day (light)"?

[*]after sunset thursday is called FRIDAY

Jesus died just before sunset so whichever day it was his dying marks the first day he was dead right?

[*] Jesus died in the daylight just before the sun set (first day)
[*] Jesus was still dead in the daylight 24 hours later (second day )
[*] Jesus was RISEN the following day (third day day )

How, counting from the first day to the third day can you get 72 hours?

I have no idea what this sentence means ... could you draw it out (as I have done above) or make a list as (I have done above) or talk me throught each day (as I have done above)... or rephrase more simply?

It appears that my last post did not clarify, but did complicate.

One more try!

Sunset ends Wednesday, countdown begins Thursday from the same sunset. Countdown ends 3 days and 3 nights later, at the sunset that ends Saturday and begins Sunday. 72 hours.

We know Jesus died about 3 pm, so it seems we can assume he rose at about the same time 3 days and 3 nights later.

The mention of overlap/underlap was in reference to the short period of two or three hours between 3 pm and sunset late Wednesday and late Saturday.

The Saturday one balances or gives equivalence for the Wednesday one and that is why Wednesday is not included in the countdown.

Hope that helps!

Okay so basically even though Jesus died on the wednesday you don't count wednesday as the first day he was dead. So you count ....
3pm Wednesday Jesus dies (but this is not the first day he's dead ) ---> sunset

Thur (thur evening/night /morning/afternoon/sunset) 1st day

Fri (evening/night /morning/afternoon/sunset) 2nd day

Sat (thur evening/night /morning/afternoon....) 3pm 3rd day RISEN
Okay now I understand. I don't agree with you (the first day you have a cold isn't counted from the day following catching the cold) but at least I understand what you are saying,

Thanks for your patience
