Sermon on the mount
Post #1What was the point of this sermon?
Proverbs 18:17 The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.

Re: Sermon on the mount
Post #31Wootah, what do you think is the point of the Sermon on the Mount? You're not saying it's pointless in light of Christ's "atoning sacrifice" are you?Wootah wrote: What was the point of this sermon?
My theological positions:
-God created us in His image, not the other way around.
-The Bible is redeemed by it's good parts.
-Pure monotheism, simple repentance.
-YHVH is LORD
-The real Jesus is not God, the real YHVH is not a monster.
-Eternal life is a gift from the Living God.
-Keep the Commandments, keep your salvation.
-I have accepted YHVH as my Heavenly Father, LORD and Savior.
I am inspired by Jesus to worship none but YHVH, and to serve only Him.

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that Jesus was outlining the principles of Jewish living as he saw it, or Godly living?
And which Adonai are you refering to?

My way of saying it is that Moses got the law but Jesus explained it.
Jesus is saying you thought you were not committing murder but in reality when you hate your brother you committed murder.
It's why from that view we all fail the very good law.

Re: Sermon on the mount
Post #34Thanks, I do see how those sayings could be interpreted that way. But another possibility, another interpretation is that instead of "raising the bar", could it be that Jesus was calling people to a deeper understanding and practice of the Law?Wootah wrote:Dio9 is saying what i would say so far. To call believers to embrace the Spirit of the Law?
Or as Jews might say, "putting a fence around the Torah". For instance, "avoid lust, and you will never commit adultery, avoid anger, and you will never commit murder".
Rabbinic Judaism has put such a fence around the Commandment not to use God's name in vain, by prohibiting the pronounciation of the Divine name completely. I think their reasoning goes, "if one never says the name of God, one will never blaspheme the name of God."
A bit of overcaution, by my reckoning. It is one of the reasons I am not a Jew. Original Biblical intent and usage seems to have been to use the Name reverently not to use substitutes (Adonai, LORD, HaShem, etc) or to put it off limits completely.
The Name of God is a gift. It is a link and an amazing focus for prayer. It's a shame that the Rabbis put the Name off limits.
It's good that Jehovah's Witnesses honor the Name, and also to see more and more Evangelicals rediscover the Name of the Father.
