Do you have a soul?

Well if you don't have a soul can you prove you have a mind?
If you don't have a soul can you prove you are anything more than animal?
If you are just an animal well don't be surprised if people treat you like an animal.

A great deal hinges on the belief that you are made in the image of God and have intrinsic value.

For me - if you could show a rational basis for some of these things it would be easier for me to let go of the necessity of God.

Wootah wrote: Thu Oct 27, 2022 6:40 pmI think we are a trinity of mind, body and soul. I would say the mind is your thoughts, the body is your physical and the soul is your spiritual dimension.
Are you claiming then that ‘mind’ is made of a different type of substance than the body, and is not governed by the same laws of physics? That would be ‘substance dualism’.

If so, you would need to show some way by which mind and body could causally interact.

I rather prefer the concept of physicalism - the mind is just matter organised in a particular way.

I'm sorry but I lost my mind some time ago engaging in pointless debates on the internet.
I don't have a soul and I am nothing more than an animal. Despite that, people treat me well, almost as well as some of them treat their animals. To be honest I have no idea what you are getting at in your response.

Not to me. We are not made in the image of any imaginary deity and simply evolved to look like we do. If it is a big deal to you, so be it. I can't see your point yet again.

I don't need you to let go of your security blanket if it is necessary for your well being and survival.

I think, therefore…?

If you don't have a soul can you prove you are anything more than animal?
But I am an animal. A mammal and a primate, too.

If you are just an animal well don't be surprised if people treat you like an animal.
I try to treat others as they treat me. I try to be kind to animals (including humans). How about you?

A great deal hinges on the belief that you are made in the image of God and have intrinsic value.
Not really. I’m made in the image of a series of sexual pairings of various primates, inheriting their DNA. I don’t consider that to mean I have intrinsic value. I have plenty of self-worth (derived from a strong survival instinct) though.

Quite comfortable with the notion that once I’m dead, that’s it - my mind will cease and my body will rot. I will not matter to the universe any more one iota. There’ll be no ‘soul’ somehow continuing.

Try this: take a disinfectant wipe and quickly wipe your keyboard. At the scale of universal space and time, I’m comparable to the bacteria that you’ve just killed with that simple motion. Virtually nothing.

And yet I get up every morning and enjoy life tremendously. Can you imagine how that’s possible?

My questions answer effectively and show how fundamental a soul is.
No, it doesn't. Not even close. It doesn't even explain what you mean by the word.
Do you have a soul?
You'll need to provide a definition of how you are using this word before I can answer this question. Do you intend to do so?

To be clear: Atheism is not a disbelief in gods or a denial of gods; it is a lack of belief in gods.

How do you have knowledge of what atheists do or do not realize? Is this anything other than a strawman based on baseless assumptions?

Imagine being in a thread entitled 'Do you have a soul?' and not answering the question. As I said atheists lose more than they bargained for.

Imagine asking a poster what they mean by the word "soul" and them not addressing the question. Oh, wait, we don't have to imagine it. This is in fact what has happened.

Imagine asking a theist how they know what atheists do or do not recognize and the theist not addressing the question. Oh, wait, we don't have to imagine it. This is in fact what has happened.
