Does God exist? What reasons are there to believe that God is real?
Admin note:
This thread used to be called "Does God exist or not?"
I have renamed this thread to be "Does God exist?"
Another thread has been created to discuss God's nonexistence, "Disproving God".

I can happily go along with "God" as a working title for a state-space far larger than our (observable) universe - from which our existence is self-serviced by virtue of anthropic selection. That all makes sense to me in terms of economy of hypotheses and supplies a sensible solution to the nature of the apparent intelligence behind all the finely-tuned "design" we perceive. Any competing hypothesis that postulates a form of willful intelligence of the kind we recognize in ourselves fails to supply a credible alternative as it lacks a comprehensible principle by which a willful mind could come to exist without going through a period of evolution from less complex forms.Cathar1950 wrote:Makes sense to me QED.
That is why i appreciate people like Hartshorn that try to develope a natural theology.
Of course it eliminates much of the pet views of God that many hold.
Sometimes we need to look at the attributes of God that are so bitterly defended and realise some of it is just the bragging of the worshipers.
The character of any state-space large enough to supply the conditions for our own particular anthropic observation is such that it caters for all tastes. It would almost certainly result in many universes very similar to our own and far more that were entirely different. At best the closest I can see mankind's relation with this kind of God would be like the relation between the Coca-Cola Corporation and an individual Coke consumer.

Like Harold Bloom asked , "who is God's daddy?"
I like the idea of God extending our reach thru imagination, sympathy and experience.
But I like the coke analogy.

So what source of energy was outside or before the universe to create such order?Cathar1950 wrote:What is Chaos? Lack of order?
That seems like it would take more energy to ensure no order then order. Order has no problem with the second law of thermodynamics if there is a source of energy outside the system.
It is a first class human tragedy that people of the earth who claim to believe in the message of Jesus, whom they describe as the Prince of Peace, show little of that belief in actual practice.

If you don't mind, I'll vector you to my post #14 in your "Infinite universes" thread for the answer to this.achilles12604 wrote:So what source of energy was outside or before the universe to create such order?Cathar1950 wrote:What is Chaos? Lack of order?
