Psalms 37:11
“But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.”
Is this supposed to be a motivating factor!? Do 'the meek' want to inherit the Earth? Seems it may be more work than it's worth. Unless god 'cleans' up the Earth first (which, with its anger and insecurity issues, it might just do).
For discussion:
What's the benefit of being 'meek' outside of 'planet ownership'?
Do the meek want the Earth?
How does one become and stay 'meek'?

Re: Meek*
Post #21"Paranoia" is when you think someone is coming after you. I am not concerned with anyone coming after me, for if God is with you, who can be against you. As for the "meek" of Psalms 37, they don't have to worry about the wicked, who borrow and do not repay, for the "meek" will eventually own everything per Psalms 37, and the wicked will be "cut off". It is the "wicked" who need to be paranoid with respect to the judgment of God. They can deny that God exist, but when the time comes, they will wish that they had been more paranoid.nobspeople wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 2:46 pmRipe with paranoia IMO.2ndpillar2 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 2:25 pmIt is the Progressive woke, like the Governor of New York State, CNN Lemon, and Whoopi Goldberg, who cancel the Conservatives, who in the end, get cancelled themselves. Is it an assumption on your part that the earth, once populated by the meek, would be without evil or is there a specific biblical reference?
PSALM 37: 9-11
For evil men will be done away with but those hoping in Jehovah will possess the earth. Just a little while longer, and the wicked will be no more; You will look at where they were, And they will not be there. But the meek will possess the earth and they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.

No, paranoid fits when that's all you see and can make everything fit one's chosen agenda.
And yes, fear, the friend of christian membership.
But fortunately, many are seeing 'the wicked' reside within such a belief system that uses fear and guilt to take followers. How ironic.

That the bible delights in pleasure with the wicked and evil being eliminated, is terrible. But I suppose that's what it takes when god can't do anything more than what would equate to a simple human construct.
But again, thanks for the reference as that's what was asked.

Post #25Those of us who lack belief in god/gods don't deny the existence of God. That would imply that one knows that God exists but denies it. As far as paranoia, why would one be paranoid about something they lack belief in? Are those who lack belief in Bigfoot paranoid that he's going to come burst through their front door and terrorize them for not believing in him? Of course not. Scare tactics only work on those who believe in the thing being used to attempt to create paranoia in others.
If those who lack belief in in god/gods are considered "wicked" by some who do belief in god/gods of one variety or another, there is no reason to worry about it. It is troubling in that it is a false representation, but there is no reason to think this false classification is going to cause some variety of god/gods to cause us trouble in the near, middle or distant future.

Re: Meek*
Post #27One could but unless I overlooked it, Psalm 37 mentions nothing about child abuse. Not terribly surprising given that the Psalm was written by David who not only committed adultery, but also murdered a true war hero in an attempt to hide his crime/sin. David got away with it, but the poor child who was the result of David's actions was murdered by God. This doesn't reveal much concern over child abuse which may explain why David doesn't mention it.JehovahsWitness wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 3:58 pmCan you replace the world [sic] "wicked" with child abuser and then repeat your sentence?nobspeople wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 3:08 pm

We could replace the phrase "child abuser" with "religious leader" and in all too many cases it would be accurate. What's even worse, in many cases the crimes/sins of these leaders are covered up rather than reported to the authorities. Some groups even use some rule about having more than one witness to a sin before it will be dealt with. The reality of course is that most child sexual abusers groom the victim and make sure that there are no second witnesses when the crimes/sins occur.
One has to wonder why God doesn't step in and do something about it. Knowing the story of David and the crimes/sins he got away and who paid the price for them may clarify why he doesn't.

Re: Meek*
Post #28I'll give this passage a lot of charity. It may well deserve it.nobspeople wrote: ↑Thu Apr 14, 2022 1:52 pmFor discussion:
What's the benefit of being 'meek' outside of 'planet ownership'?
Do the meek want the Earth?
How does one become and stay 'meek'?
There are people who will fight and people who won't. The people who will fight make life difficult just be existing. They increase the cost of everything because everything now has to be fought for.
Example: There's a tree with berries on it. Bob is just sitting there eating the berries and Moe wants all of the berries, so instead of eating berries himself he fights Bob. Now both Moe and Bob are full of bruises and assuming one is not weaker than the other, they each got less net gain out of the berries than they would have if they had just not fought over them. Most of the energy in the berries is now used for healing the bruises. Even if Bob is Christian and doesn't fight back, it cost Moe a lot of energy to beat the tar out of Bob when Bob would have just given Moe all the berries.
Think about if there were none of Moe's kind in the world. Wouldn't it be better for all the Bobs who are willing to simply share?
People have this fantasy that all the Moes of the world will just go away, or God will get them, or they'll kill each other off, but this is where I have to stop giving charity because that's not going to happen. Someone would have to make it happen and the paradox is that this person would have to be one of those willing to fight in order to do that. Even if this passage is as true as logically possible, the meek don't inherit the earth because it still belongs to God first and God is not meek. God might like the way the meek people live together but in order to have this beautiful walled garden, he's got to be aggressive and get rid of the aggressive people. The closest you can come is having a tribalistic group that is meek to one another but aggressively defends its peaceful way of life.
You'd also want to be meek if we lived in a universe where some fundamental factor made it so that others mirrored your meekness. Two suckers is better than two cheaters or even two grudgers, since the grudgers have to waste at least some energy figuring out that the other guy isn't a cheater.
This whole deal, everything in the world that spawned this thread, is about figuring out how to build a wall around meekness and just save that wasted energy.
I have to side with you here because I think sometimes, detractors imagine that because a few instances of God condemning people are dogmatic in nature, that no instances of wickedness have actual consequences for real people and you might as well be discriminating against Buddhists for having a different way of life while still being peaceful. But that's not really true and your specific example nails it.JehovahsWitness wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 3:58 pmCan you replace the world "wicked" with child abuser and then repeat your sentence? I personally can't imagine the type of virtue where a person is so ascended to pure and perfect good that they literally don't care about the baby rapist being among them and just go, "Oh, he knows not what he does, poor thing, he is a victim too, we shouldn't judge him."
However... a lot of people are either pretending to this degree of virtue or have actually achieved it.
My personal opinion is that the vast, vast majority of people who say they would be this virtuous would immediately turn over and show it to be an act if it was their own baby that was raped. But I don't know. I've seen a few people pretend to this kind of virtue and then turn over when it's themselves being hurt, but I don't know. And I well admit that when people evince this degree of virtue, I'm insanely jealous and consequently hateful of it and it clouds my judgment.
I do have to agree with this too. But this connects to my main point about the OP perfectly. Meek people would be very very very happy if there were no aggressive people. That much is true.Tcg wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 4:37 pmWe could replace the phrase "child abuser" with "religious leader" and in all too many cases it would be accurate. The unfortunate fact is that meekness attracts aggressors like flies to honey. The religious body is nice, maybe even nicer than atheists... but honestly I think you'd have to exclude their leadership to get to that. People want strong leaders who will commit violence in the name of protection of meekness, but once you have people capable of those acts leading, their own flock of passive sheep that is loyal to them is a much easier target to prey upon.
It's the paradox of nonviolence. It attracts violence. And maybe it really is all true and God will just squish all the violent people, but the paradox is that that itself would be an act of violence.

Post #29Would you not agree that someone would deliberately rapes a child for his own selfish pleasure could be classified as wicked? I am applying critical thinking skills and using my powers of deduction to analyse what type of people are being spoken of in the biblical text and come to a reasonable conclusion why if that were the case, it would be appropriate to be happy such people are gone.Tcg wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 4:37 pmOne could but unless I overlooked it, Psalm 37 mentions nothing about child abuse.JehovahsWitness wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 3:58 pmCan you replace the world [sic] "wicked" with child abuser and then repeat your sentence?nobspeople wrote: ↑Mon Apr 18, 2022 3:08 pm

The incorrigibly wicked cause harm and pain to others. No loving father would stand by and watch his baby being raped if he could do anything about it and few people would lament a world where such wicked acts no longer exist. So yes there are people that delight in the prospect of a world without that and other such horror in it.

Also sounds like the old switcharoo - where the downtrodden -pitchforks and torches in hand - get to change places with the privileged and 'see how they like it'

That sounds a lot like something the SA Brownshirts would have rallied behind...You might want to take the time to read the whole chapter of Psalms 37, to find out who the "meek" represent, and how their adversary are going to be dealt with. Whereas their adversaries, the "wicked", will "perish", but until they do, the "meek" will own the land, and the "wicked" will labor to pay rent for a place to lay their heads.
