The proposition for debate is that when one takes the tales of Genesis literally, one becomes intellectually disabled, at least temporarily. Taking Genesis literally requires one to reject biology (which includes evolution) and other sciences in favor of 'magic.' Geology and radiometric dating have to be rejected since the Earth formed only about 6000 years ago, during the same week the Earth was made (in a single day).
Much of the debate in the topic of Science and Religion consists of theists who insist on a literal interpretation of Genesis rejecting basic science. Most of the resulting debates are not worth engaging in.

Post #61Yes, of course. Nature determines those things such as how many twins are born, how long a baby takes to grow in the womb etc.
This appears to be your explanation for virtually anything and everything that doesn't fit with origin science stories and personal antireligious views ... it could have been the same in the past. The more you use that explanation, the weaker it becomes (not that it had any legs to stand on to begin with). This appears to be your explanation for virtually anything and everything that doesn't fit with biblical stories and personal religious views ... it could have been different in the past. The more you use that explanation, the weaker it becomes (not that it had any legs to stand on to begin with).
How about some actual evidence or reasoning as to why any of these claims of things being the same in the past should be taken seriously? All you've done so far is to simply state it as a personal opinion, without any justification whatsoever, despite your attempts to say it is science. I kid you not

Re: The Debilitating Effect of Taking Genesis Literally
Post #62That is a two way street. If we can't use science to tell us anything about the past then what is left? A book of tales of unknown provenance telling us stuff with absolutely nothing to validate them? The Noachian flood story was debunked a long time ago and only die hard creationists still cling to it as being a literal event. The water issue is the least of the problems it faces.

Post #63Nothing! Absolutely nothing is left to discover the origin of all things. There is only one way. Science is not that way. Science does not know, and what has been called science falsely is a bunch of hot air based on belief alone.
The God of the bible is actually well known. Tested. Proven. Observed. Repeated.A book of tales of unknown provenance telling us stuff with absolutely nothing to validate them?
That is foolishness and less than an old wive's tale. The flood happened just as the bible says and science has nothing it can say about it. Science is not even a player in the real origins game! Why? Physical science cannot deal with the creator. Science cannot deal with anything spiritual. Science does not know what the past was like and has merely slapped together a fabricated and faith based series of fables all based on the same belief. The Noachian flood story was debunked a long time ago and only die hard creationists still cling to it as being a literal event.
I dealt with that issue, and all other issues can also easily be dealt with swiftly and decisively! The water issue is the least of the problems it faces.

Post #64We can't deduce that at all when there is no evidence or basis for that conclusion. You are simply making stuff up and trying to retrofit conclusions dictated by religious beliefs. Try using the available evidence to lead you to a valid conclusion rather than creating unsupported scenarios to try and make your conclusion fit.

Post #65That is far from the truth. It is only a matter of faith, and faith can allow one to believe anything regardless of whether it is true or false.

Re: The Debilitating Effect of Taking Genesis Literally
Post #66It doesn't have to. It deals with the real world we inhabit and all the data and observations we have proves beyond any reasonable doubt that the Noachian flood not only did not happen but it could not have happened. Ancient stories involving gods and magic are not even relevant.

Re: The Debilitating Effect of Taking Genesis Literally
Post #67No. You cannot. I can! No one can using science though. Science is too small to cover it. I can because I use the record of the past God gave to man. I also use actual science and evidence. Both. Together. What does the evidence say about evolving? I would think that it says a lot of adapting and evolving happened. Creatures do seem to have changed a lot over time. I could even allow the possibility that some dinos evolved from birds. Maybe. Maybe not. I don't think we know. But if they did, then that happened in a short known time frame. It would only have taken at the most centuries, and possible only years or even months or maybe even weeks for all we know. My own opinion is maybe even days! So we have the two known factors in the equation. One is a lot of evolving did go on (all to created kinds of course) and the other factor is that all these changes happened in a short time. So don't give me that hooey about there is no evidence! There is just no evidence that the narrow minded belief system of science and it's disciples are willing to accept or even look at!
They simply make stuff up and trying to retrofit conclusions dictated by so called science religious beliefs.
Try admitting that only the beliefs foisted onto the evidence is what the cult of so called science uses to fabricate it's fantasy dream date models!Try using the available evidence to lead you to a valid conclusion rather than creating unsupported scenarios to try and make your conclusion fit.
Pot, meet kettle.

Post #68The real world includes more than the little sand box science plays in. They specialize in ignoring evidence! They specialize in molesting evidence with their beliefs! There should be a heavy fine for them even using the word evidence!
We can't help you deal with your delusion when you do not give specifics on how you imagine anyone proved any such foolish thing.we have proves beyond any reasonable doubt that the Noachian flood not only did not happen but it could not have happened.
To what? Your head? They are relevant, those stories of the heathen nations and people's history. The stories of all the spirits from ancient Egypt for example prove that spirits were accepted as part of life and reality! The recorded lifespans of many many centuries in Sumer are also relevant, though obviously they must be measured and corrected using Scripture! You do not get to wave away evidence by trying to limit the definition of evidence to your little circle of belief based so called science. You honestly need to get over that big time. That is more dated than disco.Ancient stories involving gods and magic are not even relevant.

Post #69Wrong I know Him. So do untold millions of others and we have seen him work. Over and over. You do not get to declare the experience of most of mankind with the spiritual world false! You only get to plead abysmal ignorance.

Re: The Debilitating Effect of Taking Genesis Literally
Post #70I had to stop there. No one can use science. but you can use science. That sums up your argument nicely. Self-contradictory nonsense.
"Science is too small" is a meaningless phrase. The scientific method was developed by humans in order to investigate everything with a built in mechanism to sift out biases and errors. Have you got something better as a replacement method?
